during the first section of the 5 E model, engage, students are asked a question or brought upon an idea that reflects on background knowledge or previous information taught on. During the explorer section of this model students are able to work with peers or by themselves to find answers to topics and ideas. During the explain part of the lesson students are asked to reflect back upon what they learned during the engage and explore portion. This establishes knowledge and make sure students are on the right task and understanding. Once students have the explanation part figured out, they are then asked to elaborate on what they know this is where misconceptions can be proven wrong and show where students level of understanding is. The last portion is evaluated where students' knowledge is assessed in the teacher and students can reflect on the lesson to see what went well and what went wrong. All of these create learning that is equips for students and helps learner's understand science topics better.
Topic: Earth's Systems Climate
Grade: Third
Type: ESS
ENGAGE: The starter question will be presented to students "what is the climate today? and how does it change throughout the year?" Students will then talk within groups and discuss how climates change and compare to other places around the world. Once the class comes back togher in a discussion, the teacher can present pictures on the board of climates in all different places. This allows students to see how Ohio's climate in December might compare to south America's climate in December.
EXPLORE: Students will then begin a small research portion of the lesson. Students will be given four different maps of places around the world and will be asked to search what the weather is like in those places. Students will record their findings in their scientific notebook.
EXPLAIN: Students will then be able to walk around the room and see how there climates compared to those in different places. While walking around the room, students will be asked to talk with peers about why this might be. This will have students begin to wonder "why re climates different in different places around the world?"
ELABORATE: Students will then watch a video as a whole group that explains climate and weather. This will solidify stduents understanding of why/ how different regions of our earth are different temperatures. Video Link https://youtu.be/CsC98aesD7I?si=V3wVr8IguxRyc_DD
EVALUATE: To assess students understanding of climates and climates patterns around the world, the class will complete a Kahoot all about climates and weather patterns! This is an informal way to see where students understating lies.
Play Kahoot! | Weather vs. Climate Example Kahoot
This is a good example of a 5E lesson because it directly affects all five E's and gets students excited to learn about scince and the cliamte
I created this lesson becuase it something I have always enjoyed learning about and can help better undertsand Earths and Earths systems
The cross-cutting concepts targeted is patterns. Students can see patterns in our world's climate based upon there researching of different regions around the world.
This lesson builds upon all four C's. Students are asked to think critically, be creative communicate and collaborate throughout the whole lesson. This lesson is very engaging for young children and teaches them a lot without including too much "busy work"
One way this lesson could be improved is through providing students will doodle note sheets to use when watching the video. This could allow for more creativity and understanding of topics within the video.
