Talk, Sing, Read, and Play Every Day
SHELLS is a bookmaking process that uses fun, engaging family activities that encourage conversations through "talk story", sharing ideas, stories, history, and opinions between the parent and child. The families' choice of activity is culturally sensitive and based on the family and child's interest. The bookmaking process helps to document the activity in a way that promotes foundational early literacy skills (oral language, authorship, putting the story in narrative form, using words to describe the activity, etc.).
Required: Complete the SHELLS Overview and Developmental Parenting before the other training sessions.
Depending on your setting and age group, select the training that best pertains to you. Or, you may choose to complete all the sessions as professional development.
If in doubt, check with your supervisor or contact EarlyLiteracy@mfss.org.
