THOMAS WALSH
THOMAS WALSH
Thomas Walsh is my father. I choose him because he was always been someone full of stories and he deserves to have a place to share them. I also picked My dad because he's a very quiet about his personal life and I wanted to focus on that. I knew going into this it would be a challenge to interview him because of his "nonchalant" attitude towards personal questions. So when he agreed to the interview, i was relieved. A major highlight of his life that i learned was his involvement in the Afghanistan War and the struggles that he faced which shaped my Dad into the person he is.
Thomas was born in 1966 to Bernie Walsh and Ethel Walsh in Astoria, Queens. Astoria and like many other places in New York City was first home to the indigenous tribe, the Lenape. Thomas was the third of 4 children. 2 of those siblings are from a separated marriage from his mother. Thomas lived in a very strict and grounded home, he was expected to help out and compile with what was told. Growing up in the 1970s life in Queens was full of many challenges and success such as Demographic Shifts but also Industrial Decline. While Astoria has long been known as a diverse neighborhood from various parts of the world, including Greece, Italy, the Middle East, and Latin America. This influx of immigrants added to the neighborhood's cultural richness and diversity. But while the neighborhood continued to grow, The 1970s marked a period of industrial decline in Astoria, as manufacturing jobs moved out of the area or declined in number. This had economic implications for the neighborhood and contributed to changes in its landscape. Overall, the 1970s were a time of change and transition for Astoria, as the neighborhood grappled with economic shifts, demographic changes, and efforts to revitalize and renew its urban fabric.
Through out this whole journey and interviewing process the main thing i learned from my fathers idea of the American dream was, Family. To my dad family is the main factor to having a good life. Being alone in the world is not fun, especially when you're struggling. But being around people who love you helps that struggle. My dad taught me to always love your neighbor no matter who they are and/or where they come from, and i think it's a key piece on why he as the man he is, he focuses on family. If i had to sum up everything I've learned and connect it back to the American Dream i would take away the idea that; you don't have to be rich and famous to live a luxurious life. You can be rich in love and peace from everyone around you.
On the afternoon of December 13, 2001, Thomas was part of a military engagement through the white mountains of Eastern Afghanistan within the caves of Tora Bora, which borders Pakistan. His mission was just under way when he and his crew came under a fierce resistance from the Taliban. As they headed into the cave complex, they were able to push back but that was only the first wave of Taliban. All of sudden “all hell broke loose”, the Taliban fired a few RPG’s and one of them hit a cave wall right in front of Thomas. All Thomas could do was shield his face and take the residue of the explosive all over his arms. Due to high adrenaline Thomas didn't feel any pain but 40 minutes later when everything started to settle, He found himself soaked in his own blood, his dark green shirt now red. He was medivac to a M.A.S.H hospital (Mobile Army surgical hospitals), where doctors discovered that there were 55 pieces of metal piercing Thomas’ arms. This left Thomas with multiple scars, both physically and mentally. Thomas Walsh, a man of strength. Thomas Walsh, my Father.
