For my Wesearch product I researched my Mother, Magalie Cavalier. I decided to research her because I know she went through a lot in her life that I didn't know about and wanted to learn more. In order for me to learn about her I researched the conditions of Haiti at the time and how it affected her life. New facts I learned about her is that she was all alone when she migrated to America to live another life. Another thing I learn is that my mother was forced to marry my father to get her green card. She also had to raise me all on her own.
Magalie was born in Haiti in 1966. She had a rough childhood due to the declining economy of Haiti ever since they gained freedom. She learned how to cook, clean and take care of her family. In 2002, she meet her husband who was a really bad guy and would abuse her for his own entertainment. She was 40 when she moved to America and decided to become a nurse after a long amount of time. To this day she helps people who are sick and saves lives as a nurse. In 2009, she got a divorce on him husband and would leave her and take me with her.
My mother story helps me understand the American Dream because it shows me that people struggle just to get close to and achieve the American Dream. It also shows that everyone has an upbringing that gives them the motivation to achieve the American Dream. For example, everyone has had a bad part of their life that they had to overcome just to move forward in life. It also taught me that you have to try your hardest and have to achieve things in life to achieve it. The American Dream could also be achieve depending on the steps a person takes to earn it.
Magalie in Haiti
“Attention passengers. Flight Q23 flying to America is now ready to board. All passengers for this flight should make their way to gate 22.” Magalie felt a jolt of both excitement and sadness. The moment she had been waiting for had arrived. There was no turning back once she boarded the plane. The impossible decision of either to leave her family behind and migrate to a better place for a better life or stay with her family and live a life full of continuous poverty. She then boards the plane filled with the sadness of leaving her family but being happy that she is one step closer to living a nice and sustainable life in America. She has never been on a plane before this moment so she felt fear going on the plane. She was worried about the people she came across and finding a job since she couldn’t go to college. She also didn’t know English so it would take time for her to learn it and be able to speak. She also came to America alone so she was worried about how she would handle herself with no one to translate words for her. Her main obstacle was the country she lived in and its poor economy. At the time Haiti was very poor and unstainable to the point that it was unlivable.
During her teenage years she attended high school in haiti. She was a good student in the class since schools in Haiti are really strict in terms of education. She got really good grades and studied a lot because if she got a bad grade her parents would punish her. During this time, “she realized she wanted to be part of the medical field but she couldn’t since Haiti didn’t really have good hospitals.” After a couple years of studying and passing high school, she started nursing school in Haiti so she could become one. She didn’t finish in Haiti because she would soon move to America.
Magalie with her first-born child
When she was 30 years old she had her first child in haiti. She would name her Medjina. She would take care of her a lot and would teach her daughter to be independent and learn how to survive in Haiti. She would teach her how to clean, do laundry and do things adults could do. 7 years after having her first child she would leave Haiti to go to America. At the age of 37 she would take a plane to get to America. She obtained a Visa and was sad since she had to leave her child behind. Her child was in the care of her first husband She was scared and worried since she was on the plane all alone and would experience new things once she arrived.
Once she arrived she worked as a housekeeper for someone who turned out to be best-friends with her soon to be husband. She became a housekeeper once meeting a guy that would hire her. He would make her work endless hours with no breaks and not a single regard for her well-being. While at her job, “she met a fellow housekeeper that she quickly became friends with.” Soon she would be forced to meet and marry her boss friend in order to get her green card. She knew he was a bad man so she mentally prepared herself for the inevitable. He seemed nice at first but eventually he would show his true colors. A couple years within their marriage she got pregnant with her second child but her husband didn’t like that and forced her to get an abortion. Even after that he would still abuse and not care a single bit about her. In 2007, she noticed that her belly was getting bigger but didn't think much of it because she was under so much stress from her husband and her harsh job. After a couple months, it turns out she was pregnant again, this time with her third child. After she told her husband that she was pregnant again, he freaked out and wanted her to get another abortion, but she couldn’t because she was already 3 months pregnant. Even though she was pregnant, her husband would neglect her and not take care of her a single time. She would still have to work endless hours and no breaks even though she was pregnant. Whenever she needed something, she would call her husband but he wouldn’t pick up. Oftentimes he would just call her to curse her out. Once she was in labor, she called her cousin who was a dispatcher for the ambulance and paramedics. The ambulance would soon arrive to pick up Magalie to take her to the hospital. Once she arrived at the hospital, she would give birth to her 2nd born-child. She would name her child Christian after the religion. But she would soon be devastated when she knew that the child wasn’t crying. The doctor and nurses would then take the baby to a separate room to watch over the child and try to make sure it survives. The baby was born premature due to the stress caused by her husband. Magalie needed a vaccine card to visit her child but she forgot it in her purse at home. She had to make the choice to call her pathetic, abusive husband to come to the hospital and give it to her. He arrived and gave it to her then left right away. A long while later the baby started crying and she would soon take him home. Her husband didn't like to see her so he moved to the attic and would only go downstairs when he needed something. She would attend nursing school to be able to become an official nurse. A year later she would become a nurse and finally would get paid enough to sustain herself. While she was at work she hired a babysitter to watch over her child. Magalie would have to leave work very often because the baby would constantly be sick and would have to be taken to the hospital. The husband didn’t care a single bit. Magalie would then decide to get a divorce to end the suffering she would go through. After a couple years she decided to get a divorce so she could leave the husband and live on her own. She would gain custody of the kid and would continue to take care of him to this current day.
After a couple years she decided to get a divorce so she could leave the husband and live on her own. She would gain custody of the kid and would continue to take care of him to this current day. Magalie perceived the American dream as living a nice life with no issues and achieving all the dreams she had. She would become a nurse and live with her children. She would also believe in it because she has the same nursing job she got years ago and has a stable paycheck to survive. She would also believe that she is living the American dream because she has loving kids, a nice job and a bunch of friends she made along the way. She believes that the American dream is equally attainable for everyone as long as they are on the right path and know what they are doing.
