Introduction
For my WeSearch project in U.S. History I decided to research outside of my family and rather dive into the story of Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), the 'father of modern electricity.' Strangely, curiosity sparked within me as I read Nikola's last name "Tesla" - a name similar to a well known company many may recognize. Conducting a research into who Nikola was, I was able to come across several sources informing me in regards of his life and the fact of how the name of the infamous 'Tesla" was 'a tribute to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla.' Marveled by such information and the unusual intelligence Nikola had possessed growing up, my curiosity peaked furthermore. Unfortunately, Nikola Tesla had passed away decades ago for me to have conducted a interview in person. However many sources online provided an efficient timeline and interesting insight on Nikola. Sharing how he had once worked for Thomas Edison though later had become his competitor, as well as that Tesla had a total of 125 inventions, and lastly that he had never wed or had kids.
Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, now known as Smiljan, Croatia. Tesla grew up among four other siblings along with a father, Milutin Tesla, who was a Orthodox Priest, and a unschooled mother, Georgina Djuka Tesla, who had been an inventor herself. It was believed that Nikola's inventive nature was influenced by his mother alongside the unusual poetic touch he seemed to carry was believed to somewhat have been influenced by his father and the religious beliefs' he held along with a interest in literature.
Nikola Tesla had been an acclaimed visionary inventor, an electrical engineer and a physicist. He is best known for his groundbreaking work in the development of alternating current (AC) electrical systems, leading to a revolutionized way for electricity to be transmitted and utilized. Tesla began his journey for a Telegraph company in Budapest, Hungary after attending from the Technical University of Graz, Austria, and the University of Prague. After some experience in Europe, Nikola immigrated to the United States in 1884, initially working with Thomas Edison. But this pair didn't last long as there were many differences that arose after awhile. Later, he had as well contributed his inventions of an induction motor and the Tesla coil, laying a foundation for wireless communication alongside transmission of electricity over long distance. As well making advances in robotics and X-Ray technology.
As Nikola Tesla grew to be more focused within his inventions, his expected life of marriage and a prospective future with children became a priority no more. But rather he was left in a silencing isolation and solitude of work, eventually dying in the year of 1943. Despite his revered actions from time to time, Nikola Tesla is a pioneer of modern electrical engineering - continuing to still inspire scientists, engineers and inventors around the world.
What does your individual family member's story reveal about the historical legacy of the American Dream?
Nikola Tesla, had a deeply rooted American Dream of a vision in which he sought to advancing technology and bringing a betterment within humanity. And when arriving in the United States in 1884, Tesla saw America as a land of opportunity where he could finally pursue his ambitions and ideas of inventions. In terms of revealing 'about the historical legacy of the American Dream,' Nikola Tesla's story both embodies along with challenges the American Dream and its legacy. Tesla arrived in the United States with little to nothing as he had a few cents on him and just his intellect and ambitious dreams which he wished to pursue. He demonstrated a classic narrative of immigrants who seek an opportunity within America. Though above all odds his story brings light to the idea of how some individuals from diverse backgrounds' may have (had) the opportunity to pursue their dreams and achieve a goal of success through their hard work and ingenuity. Additionally, it must as well be taken into account all the obstacles Nikola had to face which may have hindered him progress - overshadowing his achievements. These 'problems' included; financial difficulties, professional rivalries, systematic barriers and other personal challenges that came with such an overwhelming intellect and expectations from within Tesla himself. To sum it up, Nikola Tesla's story offered insight into both the ideas of promises and complexities of what having an American Dream can be like and brings light to the theme of opportunities.
