Why should we use a Primary Coach Approach to Teaming?

Read and reflect on the rationale from The Early Intervention Teaming Handbook by Dathan Rush and M'Lisa Shelden:

'In light of information and resource documents from AOTA, APTA,  ASHA, DEC, and the work group on Principles and Practices in Natural Learning Environments and as required by Part C, early childhood practitioners are faced with the task of re-conceptualizing their roles with families and children with disabilities from independent, child-focused interventionists to members of family-centered teams using a Primary Coach.  An interdependent team of highly qualified practitioners is more likely to support families in a manner that will build their capacity to confidently and competently promote the growth and development of their children.'

Food for Thought:

How  does this information match what you have learned so far about Family Centered Practices?

In  what ways might a primary coach approach to teaming strengthen the relationship between the coach and the caregiver?

What possible benefits can you envision a Primary Coach Approach bringing to your program and the families you serve?

The Fidelity in Practice-Primary Service Provider (FIP-PSP) is a set of checklists for administrators and implementation teams to evaluate teaming practices within the Primary Service Provider model.

The FIP-PSP Checklists include clearly written indicators that describe the characteristics of practices associated with operationalizing a primary service provider approach to teaming.
