This course provides support and reinforcement of reading skills and strategies taught in the general education curriculum. Students receive additional support in: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. The focus of this course is to help students develop reading skills, learning strategies, and critical thinking tools to overcome difficulties in reading while emphasizing the concepts necessary to be successful in the general English curriculum offered in the high school. This course works in tandem with IRW1, IRW2, and/or US Literature.

Students are placed into English Proficiency Development based on a combination of: NWEA MAPS, Writing Accuplacer, and Reading/Writing PSAT & SAT Scores.  

Integrated reading & writing i (irw i): 9th Grade

Students apply thinking skills to their reading, speaking, listening, and viewing.  Students read to locate, select, and make use of relevant information from a variety of media, references, and technological sources.  Students read and recognize literature as a record of human experience.  Students write and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences.  Students write and speak using conventional grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. (Differentiated instruction).

integrated reading & writing 2 (irw 2): 10th grade

Prerequisite: Integrated Reading and Writing I

 This class will provide the skills necessary to meet and exceed state standards for 10th grade students.  Students read and understand a variety of materials. UNITED STATES LITERATURE & COMPOSITION: 11th Grade

Prerequisites:  IRW I AND IRW 2

This course will include historical documents, speeches, Supreme Court decisions, short stories, poetry, classic literature on film, plays, and novels in association with examination and analysis of cultural constructs associated with multiple genres from diverse time periods and cultural constructs. Students will write analysis papers and complete projects in response to the literature.  Students will also write in a variety of genres in association with models from famous US literature. This course will also include college entrance exam preparation.

Myths, legends & folktales: (9th - 12th grade)

Length: Full Year

Students of Myths, Legends & Folktales study the various stories from different cultures and time periods that create the patterns of story as we now know them. When students recognize these then they are privileged to layers of meaning when these stories are allusions in other texts that they might have otherwise missed. Though many of the allusions in texts are footnoted, interrupting the story to do the research hinders the enjoyment and comprehension of the work. A course in Myths, Legends & Folktales builds students’ knowledge base, bringing them into the world of the patterns, symbols, and ideas of the ancient storytellers and giving them access to a world of ancient and modern literature and nonfiction.

 Students learn to organize effectively, develop ideas, use voice effectively, select word choice, develop sentence fluency, use conventions appropriately, and format their presentations in a polished and useful manner.  Students will read, analyze, and discuss examples from a variety of genres to provide creative models for student work.   Students will work in a variety of genres including: micro fiction, flash fiction, triptych fiction, creative non-fiction, creative essays, novellas, and poetry, playwriting, and song lyrics.  Emphasis will be placed on analysis, the creative process, and organization skills.

LIT 2002: world literature after 1600: (10-12th gradeS)
