ART I

Art I is intended to be an introduction to art through student exploration of many different art materials. The course includes techniques in drawing, painting, 3-dimensional work, and crafts with an emphasis on drawing. Creative problem solving is emphasized through specific assignment problems. Art history will be integrated into the assignments throughout the year. Students will improve their skills and become competent in the use of art terminology. Goals include a gradual improvement of art skills, an increased visual awareness, and an increased understanding of art principles and structure.
ART II
Prerequisite: Art I

Art II is intended to develop an improvement of art skills for those students wishing to continue in a studio arts class. Media is re-explored at a more in-depth level. It includes work in drawing, oil painting, watercolor, 3-dimension, and crafts with the emphasis remaining on drawing, which includes a closer examination of drawing the human. Students will also be introduced to materials and techniques not explored in Art I. Goals include deeper visual awareness and creativity, more improvement in art skills, and greater demand on the student in decision-making. Art II students also should consider building work for Studio AP Art if they continue onto Art III and Art IV.
ART III & IV

Art III-IV is geared for the student leaning towards art as a leisure time activity in the future and for the student who may pursue it as a career or a career-related need. Although specific styles and techniques are required in course work, students make their own decisions in their development as artists. Creativity and originality are expected, and there is an emphasis on design and composition. Goals include student contribution to the art of Meeker High School, maturity as an artist, and improvement in creative thinking. Although an outline of study will be offered throughout the year, advanced artists may vary from this and may individualize their studies with teacher guidelines. Goals include student growth within the combination of quality, originality, and independence as an artist. Students will also have the opportunity if they chose, to complete an AP Studio Art portfolio (2D, 3D and Drawing). The AP Studio Art portfolio consists of a breadth, concentration and final section.

Yearbook is a year long class for those who enjoy the social life of high school. In this course you will learn photography, photoshop, and design concepts as we put together the yearly yearbook. This class will also include putting on socials and attending events for photography. By the end of the year you will have a strong photography portfolio and an excellent add for your high school resume. If you want to be more involved at MHS this class is for you!

Art Appreciation is a guaranteed transfer course that meets partial completion of the Arts and Humanities credits needed for the General Education requirements that need to be met at the collegiate level. This class helps students understand the importance of Art throughout history, in today’s society and the social impact art has on our everyday lives. Students will be able to understand, critique and have a working, basic knowledge of art. The class is paired with either COM 1150 or ART 1111/1112. This is a statewide Guaranteed Transfer course in the GT-AH1 category.

This class provides the knowledge base to understand the visual arts, especially as related to Western Culture. It surveys the visual arts from the Ancient through the medieval periods. This is a state core course.
Activities include discussion, lecture, slide presentations, and available video resources. The relationship of one art period to other areas such as music and literature will be touched upon and, should be absorbed as peripheral understanding. This course is intended to help the student leaning towards a fine arts, art education, history, or humanities major or minor. The class is paired with either COM 115 0 or ART 1110. This is a statewide Guaranteed Transfer course in the GT-AH1 category.
This course alternates / rotates with ART 1112 and is offered every other year.

Ceramics is a college course that meets a general elective requirement at the collegiate level. Introduces traditional and contemporary ceramic forms and processes including hand building and throwing on the potter’s wheel.

Ceramics II is a college course that meets a general elective requirement at the collegiate level. Course covers ceramic wheel throwing and explores intermediate-level traditional and contemporary approaches to ceramic form and processes.

band classes
Band courses are for students who currently play or who have played a musical instrument. Students will develop their ability to play their instrument as a member of an ensemble. Participation in homecoming festivities and select home sporting events are required. Other activities available to members of the band include honor band festivals, solo and ensemble festival, large group festival, and other performances. Students will perform in at least two concerts each year.

choir classes
This course is for students who enjoy singing or who want to become a better singer and learn more about singing. Students will learn about the anatomy of the voice, proper vocal production, methods and techniques for improving range and tone, and fundamentals of reading music. Students will have the opportunity to participate in honor choir festivals, solo and ensemble festival, and other local performance opportunities. Students will perform in at least two concerts each year.
