The Captain is overall responsible for the safety of all personnel. This includes requirements for the use of personal flotation devices, lifelines, hard hats, safe footwear, etc. The ship’s Safety Officer will assist the Captain in ensuring all safety procedures are strictly followed. The science party is expected to secure all scientific gear safely prior to leaving port. Chief Scientists are reminded that accidents that may require medical care ashore can delay and inconvenience an entire cruise. The Chief Scientist, the Marine Technicians, and the ship’s Safety Officer are all responsible for establishing good safety procedures for the science operations. The Marine Technicians may also act as a “safety officer” for rigging and over-side operations but only as directed by the Captain.
All accidents or near misses involving bodily injury must be reported to the Captain, who is required to report them to Designated Person Ashore (DPA) and Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Director of Marine Operations.
