Unit 11

Gases and the Gas Laws

March 30-April 24

(4 weeks)

Essential Question(s):

How does the Kinetic Molecular Theory allow us to understand the properties of gases?

How does a blood pressure reading relate to the properties of gases?

Why does atmospheric pressure decrease as elevation increases?

Standard(s):

Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.

Use mathematical representations to support the claim that atoms, and therefore mass, are conserved during a chemical reaction.

"I can" Statements:

  • Describe the units used to measure pressure, temperature, and volume of a gas.
  • Use the various Gas Laws in order to solve for an unknown quantity.
  • Explain how gases are different as compared to solids and liquids.

Reinforcement Activity:
