Unit 10

Properties of Solids & Liquids

March 9-27

(2 weeks)

Essential Question(s):

How does the shape of compounds and molecules effect their chemical properties?

How does the change in state of a substance effect its chemical composition and properties?

Standard(s):

Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.

Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.

Use mathematical representations to support the claim that atoms, and therefore mass, are conserved during a chemical reaction.

"I can" Statements:

  • Draw electron dot structures.
  • Use the VSEPR Theory to predict the shape of a compound.
  • Use the electronegativity of an element to determine its polarity.

Reinforcement Activity:

  • Gumdrop Molecules
  • Molecular Geometry Lab
