(Under Construction)
Skill CUES
Toes to Target (facing target head-on)
Swing (arm/ball swings "straight" back)
Step (step forward with other/opposite foot)
Throw with Magic Fingers (swing throwing arm "straight" forward like a swing-set and follow through with fingers pointing at target)
*Tips:
- The closer you are to your target, the slower and softer you want to be.
- Let the ball float out of hands (from your fingers).
- If you are rolling/bowling, your "step" should be a low "lunge" step, but nothing else changes.
- As you get farther from your target, you might consider switching to overhand throwing because you can throw farther/faster.
Skill CUES
Turn (but still looking at your target) Sideways -- Ball "Cocked" Back (elbow starts out bent)
Step (with other/opposite foot) Toward Target
Twist at your Hips (rotate at your waist - belly button faces target)
Throw - follow through whipping bent arm forward finishing with arm straightened.
*Tips:
- To throw farther/faster, take a bigger faster step toward your target and twist harder.
- To improve your aim/accuracy, exaggerate finishing your throw with your fingers wiggling at your target - as if shooting lightning bolts out of your fingers.
- If you are close to your target, underhand throw is easier and also softer for someone to catch if your playing pass.
Skill CUES
Finger Pads Stand
Knees (use your legs power)
Tall turkey (push the ball upward and snap your wrist over)
*Tips:
- The closer you are to your basket, the softer you want to be.
- The farther you are from the basket, start with your knees bent more so you can use your leg strength to get more power to shoot the ball. The taller the basketball hoop or the farther distance you are from the basket, the more you bend your knees and push with them as your shooting.
- The most important part of shooting is when you finish releasing/shooting the ball, your hand/wrist should have snapped over and look like a "tall turkey". Some people call it the "goose-neck". Other people call it "hand in the cookie jar".
- You should be pushing the ball only with your dominant hand and the wrist snap makes the ball have a nice back-spin rotation while it is in the air. Your other hand (non-dominant hand) only supports on the side of the ball so the ball does not fall of of your finger pad stand before you get your shot off.
By watching the start and end of this video, you will see an excellent example of what a "tall turkey" (aka - goose neck, hand in the cookie jar, etc.) should look like. You will see a back view of the shot at the beginning of the video and then a excellent side-view of the shot at the end of the video.
