Summer RISE (Reimagining an Innovative Student Experience) is an MCPS initiative implemented in collaboration with businesses, government agencies, higher education institutions, and nonprofit organizations. The program is for rising MCPS juniors and seniors to have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning opportunities related to their field of interest.

Work-Based learning in MCPS is any employment experience paid or unpaid that results in HS credit or CTE program completion. Work-Based Learning includes:

IEC Electrical School-to-Apprenticeship Program:
A partnership with MCPS and IEC Chesapeake includes 450 PAID on-the-job training hours, 165 hours of classroom instruction, and certifications. During senior year, students are employed with an electrical contractor and attend high school in the afternoon. The IEC Chesapeake Apprenticeship Training Facility is located at 8751 Freestate Dr, Laurel, MD 20723.
GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) Apprenticeships:
GSK Apprenticeships are full-time entry level opportunities that offer high school graduates the opportunity to begin their career while working towards their associate’s degree, which is fully funded by GSK. GSK Apprenticeships in the pharmaceutical industry allow you to:
Build technical skills through a tailored entry-level development program.
Earn an associate’s degree at Montgomery College DEBT FREE.
Receive an industry-recognized “Certificate of Completion” training credential from the U.S. Department of Labor.
Be part of an inclusive organization that fosters individual empowerment and builds trust

Work permits are required for all minors under the age of 18 to work in the State of Maryland.
Work permits are not issued to minors under the age of 14.
Work permits are issued by the Division of Labor and Industry.
Work permits are not issued until the minor has been offered a job.
If the minor changes jobs, a new work permit must be obtained.
