Central idea: Learning about history can help us to understand the present.
This week the children have been looking closely at the characters in our key text, The Lost Toy Museum. We have used our knowledge of materials to identify what the toy characters in the book could be made from and to give us clues as to whether they are old or new toys.
We used this, and our new knowledge of exclamation marks to create a short story. We selected a character and wrote about our journey around the toy museum, as if we were one of the toys in the book. The adults in Year 1 wanted to take a moment to express how incredibly proud we are. The stories the children created are wonderful and it was a delight to read them.
In maths we have been looking at length and height. We spoke about who had longer and shorter hair and then measured each other. We identified who was taller and who was shorter. Some of maths highlights from this week are:
"Miss Cordner, we can use this ruler to measure in centimetres."
"I am taller than lots of my friends but my hair is shorter."
Today we started to create artefact labels for old and new objects. We thought about the materials they are made from, what they might be used for and what the history of the object might be. We will be using these to create our own museum in the classrooms, using the iPads to record a virtual tour.
