Central idea: Shelters, for humans and animals, is a basic need.
Tom: Your shelter is important because if you have nowhere to eat and sleep you will feel hungry and sick. If you are wet and cold all the time you will get sick too. Everyone needs a shelter!
We discussed in detail what our basic needs are. The EYFS children decided you need a shelter for the following reasons:
To stay dry and warm
To eat and drink
To sleep
To play
To be with family and feel loved
Both classes were keen to discuss the consequences of not having a shelter and they were able to recognise that they would not be healthy without one.
The children have developed their fine motor skills when buttering their toast for snack and have enjoyed independently washing and drying the plates they have used.
Through our inquiry, we have looked at the shelters / buildings by the prize winning architect, Zaha Hadid.
Teddy: She had made the buildings look like waves.
Aurora: They look light and beautiful inside.
Nancy: The glass parts remind me of jewels and the curved bits are protecting the jewels. I am going to draw this one!
Following our exploration of her portfolio, we developed observational skills. We looked closely at the lines and curves created in her buildings before drawing them as well as folding / curling and twisting paper to imitate the lines.
We look forward to sharing our artwork with you soon!
