Central idea: Rules and laws within a society can help shape its structure.
Our inquiry this module includes looking at rules and responsibilities and how we organise ourselves in society.
We started the module by providing the children with an immersive day into life as a Victorian child, following the rules of a school day and considering how different life was. They were surprised to see the desks in rows and having to practice handwriting with ink and the end of a paintbrush rather than using pens and the Chromebooks. We are not sure that they liked the strict rules of having to stand up when an adult entered the classroom or that we had pretend canes!
In writing, the children have been writing a persuasive letter to the King of the North after designing a crown for his daughter, linking to our core text 'The Princess and the White Bear King'. We have been impressed by the use of persuasive language and how the children have thought about extending their writing to showcase their knowledge.
In maths, we have started to explore the concept of money and comparing pounds and pence. The children have practically considered different ways to make the same amount and understand how pence makes pounds.
With the better weather this week the children have enjoyed a practical science lesson outside discussing 'living', 'dead' and 'never alive'. It was lovely to hear the well thought out discussions the children were having with each other as we identified, classified and grouped our items.
