Central idea: Human relationships can create a sense of belonging.
This week, Year 1 have continued to explore the theme of relationships, thinking about the different types of connections we can have with others. We began by discussing the relationships we have within our own families, before turning our attention to the wider community. We considered the people in Marden who care for us and those we interact with, creating maps of our local area to reflect on these important relationships.
On Tuesday, we were surprised to return from playtime to find our classroom in disarray, someone had been inside! A scavenger hunt of clues led us to The Lonely Beast book, and we were intrigued to find out more about this mysterious character. We spent time describing the beast and learning about his long journey to find friendship. Using descriptive language, we explored the settings in the book, from shimmering oceans to rocky cliffs and deep, dark caves.
Inspired by his travels, we created our own projects to show the beast’s journey. Using our DT skills, we designed and made sliding mechanisms that allowed our Lonely Beast to travel across the different backgrounds we illustrated.
In Maths, we have been learning how to compare groups of objects by matching them to one another. We have been comparing numbers of objects, using vocabulary such as “fewer”, “more” and “same.” It’s been a wonderfully busy and creative week!
