Students need to plan carefully to meet career goals as well as technical college and college/university admission requirements and are encouraged to take math all four years.

Taking Algebra 1 at the 8th grade level counts as a MHS elective credit, not as a MHS math credit and will apply towards a student’s high school GPA (grade point average). Therefore, students taking this course will be required to complete three years of math during their time at MHS, as students participating in 8th grade Algebra 1 are committing to higher levels of rigorous math instruction during high school, including Pre-Calculus and Calculus.
ALGEBRA I-A

Description: This Algebra course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the structure of Algebra. This class will focus on the basics of equations, inequalities, polynomials, fractions, graphs, real numbers and their operations.
Note: It is expected that students will take Algebra 1 the following year. All students are encouraged to take a math class each year of high school.
GEOMETRY OR HONORS GEOMETRY

Year: 1 credit
Prerequisite: Algebra I (Honors will require an "A" or "B" in Algebra 1)
Description: Geometry is the study of logical thinking and mathematical proof. Algebraic methods are used to derive geometric principles. Basic axioms and definitions lead to the development of Euclid’s theorems. This course emphasizes theory, some application, and critical thinking.
ALGEBRA 2 OR HONORS ALGEBRA 2

Year: 1 credit
Prerequisite: Geometry (Honors will require an "A" or "B" in Geometry)
Description: This is basically a second year course in Algebra. Many of the topics were introduced in Algebra I, but here will be studied in greater depth. The major emphasis is on the study of the complex number system. Students with a B or better in Algebra II are eligible for 3 vocational credits.

Description: This is an Advanced Placement Calculus course which is equivalent to the first semester of college level calculus. This course covers the fundamentals of differentiation and integration with problems representing all major areas. Description: This is an Advanced Placement Statistics course focusing on the presentation and analysis of data in different forms. Technology is utilized to evaluate data and make decisions in situations from different disciplines that utilize statistical analysis. Students will develop the ability to examine statistical information and test its validity to help make decisions. At the end of the school year, students have the option of taking the Advanced Placement exam to earn college credit.

CONSUMER MATH

Description: This course is a look at how math is used in everyday life. It deals with the mathematical side of computing pay for part-time and summer jobs; finding the weekly and yearly pay for full-time jobs that have piecework and commission; plan out basic purchases and catalog shopping; balance and reconcile a checkbook; credit card charges and payment plans; taking out a loan; buying an automobile and financing; reporting your taxes and the proper forms to complete; renting and buying a house and your legal rights; determining your net worth and budgeting expenses; retirement options, mutual funds, IRAs, stocks and bonds. This course will introduce to students a basic understanding of many topics related to becoming a better consumer.

Description: Review and application of basic arithmetic skills involving whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Introduction and application of percentages, area, volume, ratios and proportions will also be covered. The measurement system, angle, perimeter, square and board feet and formulas for geometric shapes as well as algebra will be taught.
