MEDIA PRODUCTIONS

Grade level:  9-12

Semester:  0.5 credit

Description:  In a technological world in which thought is increasingly dominated by media, students need to understand the impact of media on daily life.  Technology and communication are strongly connected.  In this course, there will be hands-on experiences with technical media, coupled with appropriate concepts, which provide opportunities for life-long skills and career options.  Homework assignments will be done outside of the classroom and usually after school, evenings, and/or on the weekend.  Included in this class is the requirement to videotape on a weekly basis - possible assignments include sporting events, city/county meetings, school district events, and community events.  Other assignments included during classroom work include:  handouts on media, public service announcements, commercials, announcements, interview skills, producing/editing events, scheduling for Merrill Productions Channel 986 and updating bulletins on Channel 986.  Students who wish to be paid for videotaping events need to videotape approximately 15 hours beyond required course videotaping, show responsibility, and show good camera technique.  This is a required course for the Information Technology Apprenticeship program.  Students enrolled in the apprenticeship program will earn one credit for classroom participation and one credit for work experience.

INTRO TO EDUCATION AS A CAREER

Grade level:  11-12

Semester:  0.5 credit

Description: In this one semester elective class, juniors and seniors will learn about a career in education, specifically teaching.  The course will include discussion and application of educational theory including fieldwork shadowing in-district teachers at the elementary, middle, and high schools.  Course highlights will include guest speakers from local university education departments and the opportunity to co-plan and co-present lessons to a group of students with the mentorship of an in-district teacher. Participants will gain applicable experience and skills in classroom management, awareness of teaching standards, career preparation, public speaking and performance, and an important glimpse into one of the most rewarding careers in the job market.
