So how do you decide which vocabulary words you should explicitly teach in a given unit?
Rather than focusing on all the new and potentially important words your students will encounter as a result of reading and listening during your unit, consider the words that will authentically appear in your unit that you want students to master by the end.
relevant to the content and concepts students need to master
used often within a unit and/or over multiple units
linked to the Standard(s) of the unit
abstract or not easily visualized
difficult to understand without background knowledge or contextual support
naturally related or have logical relationships to other words in the content
