Mapleton has identified seven research-based critical components that should be included in all unit plans:
A unit overview that includes the unit length of time, standards, key resources, and essential questions
The instructional outcomes in the form of the Know/Show charts for each of the unit's focus standards.
Specifics about the assessment(s) that will be used to monitor student learning.
The tier 1, 2, & 3 vocabulary words that are key to mastering the unit's instructional outcomes.
A clearly defined gradual release of responsibility that includes the high-level instructional strategies and activities for each of the unit's focus standards. This section should show how the learning is chunked to:
Connect new information to previous learning
Preview & introduce new content and concepts
Provide practice and to deepen understanding of new content and concepts
Allow students to apply the new content and concepts
Extend the unit learning
The anticipated misconceptions, learning hurdles, and challenges students may face throughout the unit.
Instructional strategies for diverse learners including MLL, SPED, READ, 504, GT, and/or behavior characteristics.
