V for Victory

This term, Year 6 are exploring World War II through our immersive topic, "V for Victory." The children will work as historians to examine both the global scale of the conflict and its direct impact on Uckfield and the surrounding East Sussex area. We will be working closely with a fantastic collection of primary sources, giving the children hands-on access to authentic wartime letters, photographs, military uniforms, and artefacts like genuine field telephones and deactivated shells.

A highlight of our learning will be welcoming real-world evacuees into the classroom to share their first-hand accounts of wartime childhoods. To build on this experience, we have also planned an educational trip to the Bluebell Railway. Traveling on a vintage steam train will give the children a tangible sense of what it felt like for young evacuees leaving cities for the countryside.

At home, you can support this learning by discussing any family stories or wartime items passed down through generations. When walking around Uckfield, look out for local landmarks to discuss how the town looked in the 1940s, or try baking a simple wartime recipe using basic, rationed ingredients to bring the Home Front to life.
