Born to Survive
This term, year 6 is stepping into the high-stakes world of espionage as we dive into our core text, Anthony Horowitz’s ‘Stormbreaker’. Following the journey of teenage superspy Alex Rider, our young writers will be busy in the "lab" designing their own gadget blueprints and crafting adrenaline-fueled action scenes inspired by the gripping events in the breaker's yard.
While our English lessons focus on suspense and technical design, our design and technology sessions will see the children becoming textile engineers. We are mastering pattern drafting and a variety of sewing techniques to create durable, custom-made drawstring bags.
In science, we are travelling back millions of years to explore the wonders of evolution. We will be tracing the fascinating journey of humanity, comparing the skeletal structures and lifestyles of our earliest ancestors.
Of course, term 5 is also a significant milestone for our year 6 children as they sit their SATs. We are incredibly proud of the hard work they have put in, and our mornings will be dedicated to final revision and retrieval sessions, ensuring everyone feels confident and ready to showcase their progress.
Weekly homework
The children will be set the following pieces of homework each week:
Reading Journal
One other piece of homework which could be maths, English or linked to our Learning Journey
Homework is set every Friday and is due in the following Friday.
Reminders
PE is currently on Tuesday and Friday.
The children are expected to read regularly at home. Reading journals are to be completed once a week, just like in Year 5. These need to be in school on a Friday ready to be shared.
You could write a: character profile, prediction, summary of the text so far, your opinion, story map, make links to other texts/films etc.
Spelling rules are taught three times a week, but the children work on spelling every day at school. We would like you to work on the Year 5/6 spelling lists at home as well as the spelling rules we are learning at school. Spelling Journals should be brought into school every Friday.
Arithmetic tests will take place in school on a Friday. Times tables knowledge is crucial to support them with this. They can use 'Times Tables Rock Stars' in school and at home to help them with instant recall of all the facts up to the 12 times table.
