During Term 1, we will be travelling back in time to explore life in London in the 1600s! We will begin our learning in 1665 when the Plague was sweeping across England before exploring the events of the Great Fire of London in 1666. Much of our learning across many subjects will be linked to this exciting topic, but is heavily focused on the topics of History, Science, DT and Art.

Our key question is 'How can devastation lead to creation?'

We will also be finding out the answers to these questions:

What evidence do we have of this turbulent time?

How has the capital of the UK developed since the 1600s?

What made the Great FIre of London so devastating?

In HIstory, we will be learning to ask and answer questions about the past using secondary sources, exploring evidence about the past from different sources and how reliable these could be. We will use time voacbulary to help us learn to order events and find out and describe life in a period of time from the past.

In Geography, we will learn about the UK and how it is made up of 4 countries with their own capital cities and sea borders too. We will also look at how places have changed over time with a focus on the rebuilding of London after the fire.

In English, we will be exploring the non-fiction text 'The Great Fire of London' to help us describe the streets of London in the 1600s using expanded noun phrases in descriptive sentences. We will explore the events of the great fire and learn how to use conjunctions to add extra clauses of information to our sentences, then use this learning to help us write our own recount of the fire. Later in the term, we will look at the fiction text 'Daisy Saves the Day' and use the same structure and our senses to write our own disaster story. We will finish the term with poetry and will create similes describing fire then present these on our own wonderful fire artwork. We can't wait!

In Art, we will be learning how to create different tints and shades through colour-mixing and using this skill to create our own painting of fire. 

In Science, we will be revising our learning on materials from Year 1 and deepening our learning through many small, fun investigations. We will sort and classify objects according to the materials they are made from and learn lots of vocabulary to describe the properties of materials. We will finish this learning by designing our own house and deciding which materials are the most appropriate for different parts of the house. What would you make walls, windows and curtains from?

In Maths, we will revise and broaden our learning on place value by exploring tens and ones in a number. We will also look at reading and writing numbers in numerals and words. We will revise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s from Year 1 and use this to solve problems, as well as identifying odd and even numbers. Finally, we will compare numbers using the vocabulary and symbols for greater than, less than and equals.
