Mrs Lehotzky (INA)
During Term 5, we will be travelling back in time to explore castles! Over the Easter holidays our school field was invaded by dragons and there is evidence that a great battle took place. We need Manor Knights to protect our school! Only the bravest of you have signed up to be a Manor Knight in training. Can you achieve your knighthood by the end of term and help to defend our school?
This learning journey is heavily focused on the topics of History, Science and Art.
In HIstory, we will be learning abou the concepts of chronolgy, cause and consequence, similarities and differences and power and significance. The key question we will try to answer is 'How did the invaders of Sussex defend to the death?' We will learn how England was invaded by King William of France and how once they had arrived on our shores they had to find a way to defend themselves - castles! The children will learn about the different types of castles that were built and how they changed over time. They will learn about the location of castles in East Sussex and why they were built there, and will also find out how castles were attacked and explore different defence methods used to defend the castle. During our trip to Hever Castle they will be able to see some of these defence methods in real life - we can't wait for this exciting opportunity!
In English, we will be exploring different texts about dragons. We will revise our grammar learning so far before moving on to look at the wonderful book 'The Dragon Ark' and applying to be a member of the crew aboard the Ark. We will learn how to persuade someone that we are fit for the job we have chosen, learn about the different types of dragons found on each continent and use these ideas to crate our own dragon. We will learn to use apostrophes for possession when describing the different features our dragon has and then create a piece of non-fiction writing all about our dragon. Later in the term, we will enjoy sharing the text 'The Dragon Machine' and will have many opportunities to get creative when planning and writing our own version of this wonderful story using time adverbails, interesting verbs and onomatopoeia. We will finish the term by creating our own acrostic poem about knights, dragons or castles - it's up to you!
In Art, we will be learning how to weave and using these skills to create our own tapestry choosing the colours that we would like to include and beads, feathers or other accessories that we would like to include.
In Science, we will be revising our learning on materials and deepening our learning through many small, fun investigations. We will explore which materials are reflective, waterproof and absorbent and use our findings to design a coat for the Dragon Protector of the Dragon Ark.
In Maths, we will revise and broaden our learning on place value exploring tens and ones in number and alterrnative ways to use tens and ones to make the same number. We will also look at using number facts that we know to help us add other number facts. We will then apply this to help us add and subtract 2-digit numbers crossing ten. Finally, we will learn to tell the time. We will use analogue and digital clocks to help us read and show the time using o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to the hour.
Get ready for an epic adventure to become a knight!
Please see our Learning page for more details about our learning in Year 2.
Homework is an extremely valuable addition to your child's learning.
We ask that you complete the following homework activities each week with your child to maximise their progress and learning potential in Year 2.
Read 4 times each week. You can use the reading book your child brings home or can access Bug Club using the details stuck in the front of your child's reading diary.
Please read any books 3 times before changing them.
Practise the weekly spellings that are stuck in the front of your child's pink spelling journal. Across the year, the children will revise phonics, learn the Year 2 set of common exception words and learn the spelling rules from the Year 2 curriculum.
Once your child has learnt about multiplication and division in Maths during Term 3, login details will be sent home for you to access Times Tables Rock Stars. This is a really fun resource to help your child learn their times tables.
Here are some photos of our exciting learning in Year 2.
We hope you enjoy them!
PE sessions are on Monday and Wednesday.
