Mrs Browne (Teaching Assistant)
Welcome back to a brand-new term! We are incredibly excited to share our upcoming learning journey with you. This term, our theme is Plant Power, a science-themed exploration where we will dive deep into the natural world and discover just how amazing plants really are.
As the name suggests, our core science focus this term is the wonderful world of botany. The children will become mini-scientists as they explore the fascinating functions of plants. We will be investigating how plants grow, the vital roles of roots, stems, and leaves, and how plant life cycles work through plenty of hands-on, practical investigations.
Our reading and writing in English will be anchored by two fantastic, imagery-rich books. We will read The Tin Forest by Helen Ward, a beautiful story about transformation and the power of nature, and The Bluest of the Blues by Fiona Robinson, a stunning biographical tale of Anna Atkins, who was the first person to illustrate a book with photographs of plants. Using these texts as inspiration, the children will develop their journalistic skills to write newspaper reports and learn how to research and write their own detailed biographies.
In art, we will be stepping into the world of three-dimensional design by studying the iconic British artist and sculptor Barbara Hepworth. The children will examine her famous abstract, organic forms and use them as inspiration to design and create their very own unique sculptures.
This term in maths, our focus will be all about shapes and angles. Children will learn to identify, measure, and classify different angles and explore the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Alongside this new learning, we will be spending time revisiting and consolidating core concepts learned in Year 3 to ensure our mathematical foundations are rock-solid.
As a quick reminder for our weekly schedule, PE will take place every Thursday and Friday. Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school. To support your child's learning journey at home, you can keep an eye out for interesting plants, leaves, or flowers when you are out for walks, or ask your child about what they think a plant needs to survive. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to a fantastic, growth-filled term.
PE sessions in Term 6:
Thursday and Friday.
Please remember to include trainers, shorts/ jogging bottoms and house colour t-shirt.
Reading is so important. Please read with your child every day.
Your child needs to feel this is a good, warm experience - do read to them as well as listening to their reading, so they can relax and enjoy.
Also, talk about the book as much as you can - offer ideas, discuss, challenge, compare what happens in the book to things in daily life... make them think!
We understand that starting a new term can be tiring and if this is the case, please feel free to be the one doing the reading to your child!
The children will have Spelling shed activities related to their current words we are learning in class. We encourage playing the games and challenges to further support them with this.
In year 3 we need to know the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables. They will have a test on all times tables in year 4.
You can help them practise, practise, practise!
Short bursts are best, a variety of games works better than the same thing over and over. TTRS is a brilliant resource to support this.
Things the children have learned that will help:
Multiplication is repeated addition.
Division is the inverse (opposite) of multiplication.
If you know the counting pattern, you know the times table - i.e., if you can count in fives, use this to say the five times table!
