The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to document learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s on-going planning and instruction.
Meeting this standard means that the teacher can and understands how to use multiple forms of assessment to engage students in learning, as well as reflecting on their skills, and growth. The teacher is using the assessment data to document learners' progress and guide her future instructions and planning.
6 (o) Knows when and how to evaluate and report learner progress against standards.
Description
This is a chart that I have used consistently throughout my student teaching. It is a self assessment chart where the students will do both before and after working on an activity. The green thumbs mean that they meet the "I can" statement the thumb to the side means they partially met the "I can" statement and the thumb down is they did not meet their "I can" statement. I have kept the wording and goals the same for the majority of the time using the chart. The students goal is tto o be able show AND explain what is being introduced to them. Before they are told to go assess themselves their objectives, standards, and "I can" statements are reviewed and left up of the screen with the decoding of images so it is easily refer back to.
Rationale
This artifact is an example of how I met this indicator because it shows that I can evaluate the students as well as have them evaluate their own progress. I know when an assessment is needed when the students either are starting an activity for the first time, or possibly if we have been working with the same information for a longer period of time it will allow me to assess the students to see where they have progressed or where they need more focus. At the start of lessons when the students are assessed it allows me to see their starting point and with this information I will know what, needs more attention through the unit and what the students already feel somewhat comfortable with. It will also show me certain students that may need more support throughout the unit. I know it's needed to assess the students after spending some time with the material to make sure they feel they are understanding the information being presented. I am able to report this information by keeping images of the chart and comparing the before and after of their answers. I have also collaborated with my mentor teacher about their responses and reported to another educator in the room. Since I don't have as much communication with the parents due to it being student teaching my mentor is able to use what I have reported back to her about the results back to families if there are any questions in the classroom of the students progress. This assessment chart allows students to be aware and familiar with the standards that they are working towards because when the assessment chart is brought out the students “I can '' statements and standards are posted with the use of clip art illustrations on the projector for students to refer back to. These objectives are standard driven, for example during my physical science unit I used the Next Generation Science Standards when creating my objectives and learning goals to present to the students, who will then use to self asses ththem emselves. I chose to use clip art images so students can understand what it means independently since they are not yet able to read.
6 (r) Takes responsibility for aligning instruction and assessment with learning goals.
Description
This chart was also used as a part of my TWS. This one was to organize the different alignments for my learning goals, and objectives. I created this to make sure that they are all appropriate for the activity, student's developmental stage, and assessment criteria to ensure of these aspects fit within one another.
Rationale
This artifact is a strong way that I was able to meet this indicator. This is an overview chart that I created when laying out the planning for my Teacher Work Sample. Here I planned out all the different formative and summative assessments for each lesson that I implemented. I was able to use multiple different assessments. The use of multiple assessments supported the students by giving them multiple different ways for the students to show me what they knew. All students show what they know differently, so I allowed them to be a chance for them to illustrate their knowledge, write their understanding, verbalize their understanding, and show me what they knew. These all brought out different skills that vary between students. I was able to use these assessments to verify and document their learning. All the assessment data was kept in a google slide post lesson and was graded using Meets, Partially meets, and does not meet. This was all based on the objectives and learning goals specific for each lesson and students were aware of their “jobs” before working on the activity by the “I can statements” and standards, being decoded using images, all up on the projector for the entire lesson so students or myself can refer back when needed.
