The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that allow each learner to reach his/her full potential.
Meeting this standard means that the teacher understands that all students have their differences and also understands diverse cultures and communities. The teacher needs to ensure an inclusive learning environment that allows all students to reach their full potential when working with the learning goals and objectives.
2(m) Respects learners as individuals with differing personal and family backgrounds and various skills, abilities, perspectives, talents, and interests.
Description
This artifact was a parent survey that I sent home at the start of the school year for the parents to fill out about the incoming students.
Rationale
This survey is a good example of standard 2 indicators 2(m) because this survey allowed me to gain personal and family backgrounds through the answers I received and the questions I asked. This allowed me going into the first day of school to know all the individuals in my classroom and see how they all differ from one another. I asked about the students' skills, abilities, talents, family culture and interests on the survey and got back answers I would not have been able to figure out by myself, especially not as easily and as soon as I did. This has helped me have an opportunity to respect my students. I have done this by knowing what their skills may be and presenting activities that are very interesting to them. I also had a question that asked about students' dislikes or what they may be afraid of. I am also previously aware of the celebration of holidays that the students' families participate in due to their family culture. This is so I can respect that boundary, or learn how to get through it with the students to make their time in the classroom as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.
2 (k) Knows how to access information about the values and norms of diverse cultures and communities and how to incorporate students' experiences, cultures, and community resources into instruction.
Description
This artifact is a collection of information about the schools' town, population, income levels, district, and many other factors that play a role in students learning in the classroom.
Rationale
This artifact demonstrates proficiency with standard #2 and indicator 2(k) because I completed a comprehensive review of the town, school, community, district, and students. My main focus when completing this was to gather as much information as I could on what possible factors may affect the student's learning as well as affect my teaching. As a teacher, my goal is to create a strong and inclusive classroom where all students regardless of their individual and cultural differences are heard and supported with equal opportunities. I was able to gather information through different sites, and resources online that I then was able to compile into a formatted paper. With the CFA I made myself comfortable with the surrounding environment. By gathering this information I can point parents and families in the right direction when looking for community resources. MSAS 49 has a lot of resources such as the bulldog closet where all students have access to toiletries, clothing, and house supplies. I also am familiar with the local food pantry to provide this resource to families if needed due to my researched. researcho I could prepare myself for and obstacles I may face to make sure that it does not get in the way of my teaching. Through research and knowledge of where I am, it allowed me to create a safe and inclusive environment where students can reach their full potential.
