Standard #11 Technology Standards for Teachers EMPOWERED PROFESSIONAL
11.1. Learner: Educators continually improve their practice by learning from and with others and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage technology to improve student learning.
This standard is saying that the educator is working to improve their practice by working with others and exploring practices that have been proven and promised to improve student's knowledge through the use of technology.
11.1 (a) Set professional learning goals to explore and apply pedagogical approaches made possible by technology and reflect on their effectiveness
Description
This activity was completed and then for the student assessment I had them take videos of what their work was and verbally say what they were doing when completing their work and verbally explain what they know. I then used their responses to assess where they fall under Meets, Partially meets, and does not meet. The targets they were working to meet were based on the Next Generation Science Standards.
Rationale
This artifact is a strong example of how I met this indicator. The students were given the targets at the start of the lesson after they were explained the activity. The students then used the same assessment chart that I have been using throughout the first half of the school year. I designed these learning goals based on the Next Generation Science Standards to ensure that they are professional and developmentally appropriate. For my formative assessment, I had the students take videos of the work that they have completed and while they are recording they are verbally explained what they completed and what their thinking was when completing the activity. This allowed the students to reflect on their learning goals through the planned assessment that was completed by the use of technology. At the start and end of each lesson the students have a chance to reflect on their own learning and they are able to move their name on the assessment chart where they feel best fit based on the learning targets we are working for. The students are then able to change the placement of their name post lesson if they feel differently about their understanding of the learning goals. Due to this assignment and the formative assessment being implemented by the use of technology the students were able to reflect their effectiveness on the lesson by rewatching the video and reassess the placement of their name on the self assessment chart. I was able to look back at the students responses through the use of a google spreadsheet. Every time the students would self assess themselves or complete any formative assessment I would record their outcomes to see the effectiveness of the lesson. I was able to compare this lesson with others to see if the effectiveness had changed by incorporating technology into the activity. The goal for this activity was for the students to get comfortable with meeting their goals in a different way, for example the use of technology. I allowed them to try out new tools such as the iPads and reflect using the self assessment as well as my google spreadsheet data to see how they students reacted to the implementation.
11.6. Facilitator: Educators facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement of the 2016 ISTE Standards for Students:
This standard is saying that the teacher can facilitate learning by incorporating technology into the lesson as a way to support students achieve the 2016 ISTE standard for students.
11.6 (a) Foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings.
Description
This artifact is two slide shows that I have used to project the objectives on the screen during my instructions and their activity. This allows the students to refer back to their "jobs" when working on an activity to ensure that they are on the right track, and if not they are able to recognize that and get themselves back where they need to be.
Rationale
This is a strong artifact for this indicator. I made it a goal for myself to increase the kindergarteners' use of self-assessment. By participating in the self assessment mentioned in standard 6 which was used before and after the implementation of this lesson. It allowed students to take ownership of their learning and mastery of their own learning goals. Over the course of the year I have worked to develop a practice of displaying lesson targets at the start of each lesson which are written using graphics due to the fact that the students I have are non readers. By using technology to use a slideshow format I am able to write the target that better supports their understanding and also better understanding of what the students are being accountable for. At the start of the lesson after the targets are presented the students are then allowed to individually assess where they feel they are based on the learning targets by moving their name on the chart. At the end of the lesson students are able to reassess their name placement and if they would like to keep it the same or change it to another spot on the chart. This self assessment is done both individually and as a group through the use of discussion. Technology is a strong resource and resource of taking ownership of their learning targets and outcomes.
