On September 29th, Virginia's governor Abigail Spanberger came to Danville to announce Virginia’s first Director of Outdoor Recreation at the Riverfront Park. While announcing the first director, she also spoke about the importance of outdoor recreation, community health, and tourism.
During her event, Spanberger praised the quality of Danville’s outdoor recreation. Danville’s city manager, Ken Larking, who attended the event along with her, said, “It was evident that she has done her independent research about the area of Danville”.
During a lunch meeting, Governor Spanberger previewed some of the information on her energy plan for Virginia. During her visit to Danville, she met many people such as local officials, school system staff, and high school students. Galileo students in attendance included IB senior students Georgia-Claire WIlloughby, Preslee Clay, Nelson Showalter, Talha Ata, Samantha Van Opstal, Elicia Gray, Kloe Marshall, and Kunj Patel, and junior Mariana Escobar. Junior Escobar was very eager to meet the governor: “Seeing an ultimate leader like her in action was very inspiring.”
All of the IB students had an opportunity to greet and take pictures with the governor. While they were waiting their turn to meet her, they were each thinking about how they would introduce themselves to the governor and were feeling grateful that they were going to have the opportunity. Senior Talha Ata said, “My biggest takeaway was that talking with someone in a major leadership position can still feel like a normal conversation.”
Overall, it was a special day for Danville and for our Galileo Falcons.
