You need 1.5 credits of PE and .5 credits of Health for graduation.
Most students take PE 1 in 9th grade, and PE 2 and Health in 10th grade.
Choose from one of these great electives for your 3rd PE class and/or take extra PE to stay active, have fun and learn new skills.
PE 1 Foundations Class Learn to Swim Class
PE 1 Foundations of Physical Activity PHY1015 (.5 Credits/1 Semester): Students will strive to refine various motor skills and movement patterns, increase understanding of activity strategies and concepts, and enhance physical fitness knowledge and performance. Participation in fitness and lifetime activities throughout the course will help students develop skills in teamwork, sportsmanship, and communication. Units may include: soccer, swim, rugby, dance, football, badminton, gymnastics, track, weight lifting.
Learn to Swim PHY3035 (.5 Credits/1 Semester): This class is designed for students in grades 9-12 who are comfortable in the water but want to learn how to become swimmers. Students will learn basic swim skills in freestyle, backstroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke. Students will be able to swim the length of the pool comfortably and be able to demonstrate each stroke by the end of class. Students will also learn some basic water safety skills. Weeks 1-9 will be spent on building the foundation for swimming skills and survival. Weeks 10-18 will focus on swimming for fitness and activity. Students with low or no swim experience are encouraged to join the class. Students must be willing and prepared to swim every day for the semester. Students interested in this class during their freshman year could miss PE 1, but then would take PE 2 sophomore year.The vast majority of students take PE 1 freshman year followed by PE 2 sophomore year.

Health Education PHY1035 (.5 Credits/1 Semester) REQUIRED: The course will focus on analyzing internal and external influences, accessing health resources, communicating effectively with others, making healthy decisions, setting personal goals, practicing healthy behaviors, and advocating for personal and community health. Critical content will include personal health and wellness, healthy eating, mental and emotional health, alcohol and other drugs, lifestyle diseases, CPR hands only, and human sexuality. All sophomores should be taking Health class.
PE 2 PHY 1025 (.5 Credits/1 Semester): PE 2 focuses on learning about the 5 components of fitness and developing a healthy level of fitness. Fitness assessments will be given at the beginning, middle, and end of the term. Activities may include: golf/archery, weight training, tennis/racquetball, swimming, volleyball, floor hockey/lacrosse, softball, and Ultimate Frisbee. The game units covered in PE 2 will mostly be different than the units covered in PE 1 to allow students to gain experience in a wider range of activities. This course is predominantly sophomores.

Weight Training 1 PHY 4015 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites : PE 1, 2
This course is designed to offer the student the opportunity to make significant strength gains through the use of progressive resistance primarily using free weights. The course is designed to teach students the fundamentals of strength, endurance, and flexibility training. Workouts will include exercises like squats, presses, and resistance circuits. Students will learn proper lifting form, safety procedures, and injury prevention. The course also explores how nutrition, hydration, and recovery support fitness and overall wellness.
Weight Training 2 PHY4025 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites: PE1 , 2, Weight Training 1
This course is designed for those students ready to progress in strength and conditioning through advanced lifting techniques and individualized workout plans. Students refine movement efficiency, apply biomechanical principles, and set personal fitness goals while exploring topics such as progressive overload, nutrition, and recovery to optimize performance.
Lifeguard Training PHY5095 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites: PE1, 2 Recommendation: Better than average swimming skills, can swim 300 meters without stopping using front crawl and/or breast stroke. Can surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10 pound object. Tread water for 2 minutes legs only.
Students can earn certification in Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer after successfully completing final skill scenarios and written tests from the American Red Cross. After successful completion of the class students will be ready to lifeguard at a public or private pool. You must be 15 before the last day of the class to get certified. Course fee of $135.00 covers textbooks from the American Red Cross, pocket mask, certification cards and supplies/materials.
Peer Partners PHY7085 (.5 Credits/1 Semester)Prerequisites: PE1,2
Participate in PE while making new friends and intentional connections! Able-bodied students will increase participation of students with disabilities by modeling positive behavior, offering appropriate encouragement and providing one-on-one attention for skill development activities, increasing the knowledge base of able-bodied students in accord with students with significant cognitive and/or physical disabilities in a fun, active manner. The individualized or small group instructional format emphasizes change in student health habits through a variety of fun, supportive group activities. Use of individualized and team lifetime recreational games promotes improvement in the student’s general muscle strength, muscle endurance, joint flexibility, and aerobic fitness.
Social Dance PHY6015 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites: PE1, 2
Are you someone who likes to dance with other people? Then join social dance. This course is designed to provide the beginning social dance student with a variety of dance experiences. Students learn basic movement vocabulary, choreograph routines, and collaborate in small groups to create and perform original dances. Emphasis is placed on creativity, teamwork, and self expression.
Personal Fitness PHY4035 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites: PE1, 2 If you are looking for a class to get you in shape and have fun at the same time, this is the one for you. Activities may include spinning (bikes), group strength, walking, rollerblading, water aerobics, fitness videos, disc golf, Kettle bells, med balls. May also include some team sports: badminton, Ultimate Frisbee, and tennis. Students will develop and implement a personalized fitness plan. Students will reflect on their personal fitness journey and learn to make informed choices for lifelong wellness.
Individual Sports PHY2035 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites: PE1,2
Come and learn or improve in individual sports including: personal fitness, tennis, badminton, golf, walking, spinning, swimming, archery, racquetball, bowling, disc golf, and other individual activities. Students focus on improving individual performance, learning sport strategies, and applying concepts that support lifelong participation in physical activity.

Team Sports 1 PHY3015 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) (Prerequisites: PE 1,2)
This course is designed to develop teamwork, strategy, and communication through participation in team based activities such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, flag football, ultimate frisbee, and others. Students strengthen sport-specific movement skills, apply game tactics, and demonstrate respect, leadership, and sportsmanship throughout gameplay.
Challenges and Adventure PHY5015 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites : PE1,2
This class will focus on the development of communication and cooperation skills through team building and problem solving activities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in high and low ropes course activities as well as developing basic leadership skills through the sharing activities with other La Follette students. $40.00 Fee includes a field trip opportunity for canoeing and/or climbing.
Team Sports 2 PHY3025 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) (Prerequisites: PE 1, Team Sports 1)
This course provides students with knowledge and skills in sports officiating in a physical activity setting. Through classroom instruction, hands on experiences, and simulated game scenarios, students will learn the rules, mechanics, and ethical responsibilities required to officiate a variety of team sports including basketball, volleyball, soccer, flag football, and other options. Emphasis will be placed on decision making, conflict resolution, and leadership under pressure. Students will explore officiating as a potential career or part time opportunity and will have the chance to earn certification to gain real world officiating experience. By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate competence in rule interpretation, game management, and proper officiating mechanics across multiple sport settings.
Introduction to Sports Medicine PHY7055 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites: PE1,2
This course is designed to provide the student with an overview of sports medicine with an emphasis on injury prevention, emergency care, and injury management. Students will be able to identify the members of the sports medicine team and describe their roles in dealing with the injured athlete. They will also learn bandaging and taping techniques as applied to a variety of musculoskeletal problems. * A fee for this course covers the cost of bandaging and taping supplies used during the course.
ProCPR/First Aid PHY5085 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites: PE 1 , 2
This course is for students who want to learn First aid, CPR, AED skills but do not want to be lifeguard certified. Students will learn basic first aid skills, adult, child, and infant skills in rescue breathing, choking procedures for conscious / unconscious, CPR and AED usage. Students can earn certification from the American Red Cross for CPR/AED for the Professional rescuer and 1st aid upon successful completion of skill tests and written tests. Course fee of $70.00 covers textbooks from the American Red Cross, pocket mask, certification cards and supplies/materials.
Online PE ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites: PE1,2
This online course is designed to help students build lifelong wellness habits through flexible, engaging learning. Students explore fitness, goal setting, training principles, and a variety of workouts while developing strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall conditioning. Students will also complete required weekly activities while exploring stress, sleep, sports, recreation, strategy, and sportsmanship to support personal well-being, integrity, and lifelong physical activity skills.
Swim & Water Fitness PHY3045 ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisites: PE 1 , 2
This course develops students' swimming proficiency, water safety awareness, and lifelong fitness through a variety of aquatic activities. Students practice and refine stroke mechanics, breathing coordination, and endurance while participating in activities such as swim endurance, water aerobics, relays, and water activities. They apply safety practices, set personal goals, and use feedback and reflection to improve performance. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, self management, and understanding the health benefits of aquatic exercise. Students leave the course confident, capable, and motivated to engage safely and enjoyably in aquatic activities for life. Must be able to successfully swim 25 yards of the pool (1 length).
Online Health ( .5 Credits/1 Semester) Prerequisite: none
This online course is designed to to provide skills based learning experiences that support students in becoming health-literate individuals. The course will focus on analyzing internal and external influences, accessing health resources, communicating effectively with others, making healthy decisions, setting personal goals, practicing healthy behaviors, and advocating for personal and community health. Functional health knowledge will include personal health and wellness, healthy eating, mental and emotional health, alcohol and other drugs, human sexuality, and hands-only CPR.
PE Course Substitution Policy for Juniors and Seniors Only “ A student who participates in a Board recognized athletic activities (See MMSD Athletic Code for a complete list, pg 15) may, upon application and approval, be permitted to complete an additional one-half credit (0.5) in English, social studies, mathematics, health or science in lieu of one half credit (0.5) of physical education. In order to be eligible for a credit substitution a STUDENT must:
a. have prior approval from the PRINCIPAL or his/her designee; (This is completed through required online eligibility registration for all athletics)
b. participate in a recognized athletic activity for three seasons.
c. be an athlete in good standing during the entire season, including regular attendance at all practices and competitions;
If a request to substitute credit for physical education is denied, a written appeal may be submitted to the SUPERINTENDENT or his/her designee within 10 calendar days of the denial. The SUPERINTENDENT or his/her designee shall issue a written decision within 5 business days. The SUPERINTENDENT’S or his/her designee’s decision is final.”
