Students in 2nd grade will gain more skills in reading, speaking and listening. They continue to learn and practice rules for matching sounds to letters that make up more complex words and they learn new concepts, such as words that share the same root so they can decode and comprehend unknown words in context. 2nd graders become more attentive to the features of fiction and nonfiction text, should be able to retell stories, find the theme (morale) or author's purpose in writing the text, and answer questions about the text. Students should be able to read grade level books and stories with understanding and fluency. By the end of grade 2 students should be reading at a DRA level of 28.
