Social Emotional Learning Standards

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children develop skills related to four areas of growth and development:

1. awareness and management of emotions;

2. Set and achieve important personal and academic goals;

3. Use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships; and

4. Demonstrate decision making and responsible behaviors to achieve school and life success.

There is a strong research base indicating that these SEL components improve students’ social/emotional development, readiness to learn, classroom behavior, and academic performance. (ISBE)

The attachment below explains the SEL goals and provides as list of "I can" statements detailing age-appropriate skills that children should demonstrate at each level.
