Language Arts

Reading. Writing. Listening. Speaking

At Bay Laurel, we encompass a balanced literacy approach to teaching Language Arts. Children are engrossed in multiple aspects of reading, writing, listening and speaking throughout the day. We employ teaching strategies and skills to enable children to work independently and have choice in their learning.

Kindergarten students are expected to learn 45 sight words. Flashcards can be found here.

We will be using our AlphaFriends to learn the letters and sounds! Click here to listen to our AlphaFriends song.

Kindergarten students use the Center for Collaborative Classroom curriculum for phonics, comprehension, writing and vocabulary development. The Daily 5 model is used to manage student choice during independent work time.

Sipps is utilized for early intervention as needed.

Independent reading is crucial to a child's success as a reader. Students learn to read books at their "just right" reading level and self select books from classroom libraries. In addition, students can use RAZ Kids to choose from a wide range of leveled texts with comprehension quizzes.

In addition to teacher directed instruction, students can utlize Lexia Core 5 to differentiate students' academic phonemic needs.
