Pedagogical philosophy: Here at Bay Laurel students will receive a well-rounded, developmentally appropriate educational experience. Reading, writing, and mathematics are taught every day, while subjects like art, music, physical education, science, social studies and drama are incorporated weekly.
Activities are designed to incorporate movement and collaboration whenever possible. We also believe that children should have daily choice time (either PDR - plan, do, review or Daily 5) to foster independence and build social skills such as sharing and time management.
Tk at Baylaurel is a playbased program in which the child's social, emotional, physical and linguistic development takes precedence.
Kinder at Bay Laurel is standards-based in which daily lessons are explicitly taught with the expectation that children will acquire grade level knowledge and skills that are related to core subjects: reading, writing and math.
There is no official homework in TK, although students will have opportunities to expand their learning through online programs if they choose. In Kindergarten, students are presented with a weekly "bingo" board in which they are encouraged to complete 3 activities in a row for a prize. There is usually a social studies or science magazine attached to be completed with an adult. In addition, there may be long term family projects that will be shared in the classroom that support the learning themes throughout the year. All homework assignments will be communicated through the classroom teacher's weekly newsletter.
Technology: In class, students utilize iPads to enhance their educational experience. Apps such as Handwriting without Tears and Teach Me Kindergarten help reinforce skills previously taught. Tk and K students will visit our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) lab once a week for more hands-on learning!
