Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (JROTC) is an organization dedicated to motivating young people to be better citizens. It is a student-run program with cadre to guide and assist them. Students take JROTC as a year-long class, with four different Leadership Education Training (LET) levels available. There is a 40 hour community service requirement, or 10 hours per quarter, for cadets. JROTC cadets have the opportunity to participate in several different Special Teams, as well as march in parades.
JROTC Sponsors have a long history going back to the early 1920s of assisting with the Pioneer Battalion. The Battalion Sponsor is a lady who is not in JROTC and has never been in this program, and who represents the Army values: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to travel with our special teams. Any Senior female interested in being the Sponsor for the First JROTC Battalion in the Nation will submit an application that is distributed to seniors at the beginning of the year.
Academic Team is a competitive team in JROTC that requires cadets to utilize their academic skills to complete tests. These tests cover mathematics, science, reading, current events, and JROTC knowledge. The team takes three tests, and the better they do, the higher they are ranked. If they get to the final round, they will have an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC for nationals.
The Cadet Choir is a group of cadets that sing at different events. ranging from school assemblies, community events, and sporting games. The Cadet Choir also travels with the Color Guard and sings the National Anthem after the presentation of the colors.
Cannon Crew is a team that participates in home football games by getting the crowd pumped up with different activities and games. The cannon is fired at the start and end of each game, as well as each time the Pioneers score a touchdown.
The Cavalry Angels are a female-only unarmed drill team. They hold practices before school starting at 6AM in order to learn different routines to compete at Drill Meets. They compete at Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida in the spring.
Color Guard is the group that presents/posts the colors (US, Army, Air Force, Kansas state flag) at different home sporting events and local parades. In the past, they have done Sporting KC games, World War 1 Memorial for Veterans Day, Special Forces Ball, and more. The Color Guard averages around 8 events per year.
The Drum and Bugle Corps consists of a small drum corps that plays some cadences and Bugle/Trumpet Players that play The Army Song, Taps, and the National Anthem. Along with other songs as specified by the commander.
Junior Guard is a program that teaches elementary and middle school students leadership skills, time management, leadership, flag facts, and the importance of the US Flag. High school cadets also teach Junior Guard Drill and Ceremony and get to show off their skills at a competition in mid-April. The Junior Guard also gets to participate in the Veterans and St. Patrick's Day Parades alongside the JROTC Cadets.
Leadership Team is a competitive team that requires cadets to utilize their leadership skills to complete tests on their knowledge by hands-on and interactive learning. One of the main goals of the JROTC Leadership team is to challenge students to think outside-the-box and encourage them to discover and utilize their leadership styles. The team takes three tests, and the better they do, the higher they are ranked. If they get to the final round, they will have an all-expense-paid trip to Washington DC for nationals.
The Pioneer Guard is the co-ed Armed Drill Team. They meet before school to practice their routines and compete against other Drill Teams. They compete at Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Raiders is comprised of co-ed, female, and male teams that complete in different physical challenges and obstacles to test their athletic abilities. At the end of their season, they compete in Raider Nationals in Molena, Georgia.
The Rifle Team practices shooting air rifles at targets in the rifle range located in the JROTC hall. They participate in competitions around the country.
The Robotics Team builds robots and studies robotics to compete in VEX robotics competitions.
