Last week was our first full week of school and as I reflect back on it the theme of newness sticks in my mind. There was new learning for students, teachers, and for me. We started our week off with a faculty meeting that focused on our advisory time for students. Currently students meet twice a week for forty minutes on both Tuesday and Wednesday. The purpose of advisory is to build a small community and strong relationships within a larger community and this is achieved through small groups of students meeting with one or two teachers each week. Students stay with the same advisor all four years of high school which truly allows for time to build these strong relationships with peers and teachers. As we continue this work we are shifting to a model in which advisory time on each Wednesday will now provide students opportunities to meet with their class teachers to either get additional help with the curriculum, make up or redo work in order to progress towards demonstrating proficiency, or continue working on an assignment, project, or exploratory work. Teachers will be using a scheduling program so each student will be registered for a work session which will be referred to as Flex Session. The sessions will vary each week.

Another part of the week that shared the theme of newness was Wednesday morning. We hosted a new family breakfast for families with middle and/or high students that recently moved to the Stowe community. I’m so appreciative of the parents that worked together to organize this event and volunteer their time to welcome our new families and students. This was another opportunity for me as well as some teachers to meet new members of our community as well as people who have been a part of the Stowe schools for many years. As I continue to learn about Stowe and meet new people, I am so grateful and impressed by everyone’s generosity and commitment to making sure our schools are welcoming and supportive.
