October 30, 2019

Today marks the end of the first quarter for our students. It’s hard to believe that students have been engaged in learning and demonstrating their skills for the past ten weeks. In addition to dedicating time to academic learning, students have also been participating in playoff games either as an athlete or an enthusiastic super fan, rehearsing for the school musical, organizing work for student clubs, actively involved in community service, as well as attending the annual Rowland Foundation Conference.

It has been wonderful to see so many students, teachers, and community members involved in athletic events this fall and there has been much to celebrate including a recent win by the boys soccer team yesterday afternoon moving them into finals this Saturday. We hope the outcome is the same for our field hockey team who plays this afternoon.

Our school musical, Big Fish, is about a month away from opening night. We are so appreciative of the time and energy that many community members are putting forward to making this a successful production with our students. We hope all of you mark your calendars and come see this great show December 6th, 7th, or 8th.

The Rowland Conference that students and teachers were able to attend provided us the opportunity to learn and discuss racism as we listened to Dr. Robin DiAngelo speak on white fragility. The day pushed our thinking, required us to lean into discomfort, and identify steps to engage others in conversations about racism.

Finally, last week we celebrated our school pride with spirit week. Students took the lead in organizing this week long event. On Friday we closed out the week wearing school colors and surprising students during snack. We provided pumpkin cake for everyone and our special guest, Rowdy the Raider, was there to help hand out cake.

Red Ribbon Week: This week, our high school prevention group, Bettering Our School Surroundings, is bringing awareness to our school about drugs, alcohol, and bullying. Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign, dedicated to providing drug awareness to school. The Bettering Our School Surroundings group is bringing Red Ribbon Week together with October’s Bullying Prevention month to bring awareness to students, faculty, and families about issues our students identified. Using the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, this group hopes to shine light on concerns at Stowe High School.

Lost and Found: On Friday a lot of time was spent going through shelves that are for students to use during the school day to temporarily store their extra bags, lunch bags, etc. This cleaning led to three full bins of lost and found items. If your student has lost something within the school please have them double check the lost and found items that are located in the main lobby area. Unclaimed items will be donated after school hours on November 1st.

Upcoming Events: There are many events on the calendar. Please be sure to subscribe to the announcements for the details.
