Students will understand the basics of how a piano and a guitar works, and the fundamentals that it takes to play them effectively. This class will also incorporate the basics of music theory, listening activities, and composition.

Topics students will study include:
Proper posture and hand position
Where the notes/ strings are on the piano/ guitar
The study of various elements of musical terms related to it
Rhythm and note values
Sheet Music
Chord sheets
Scales
Composition
Assessment/Grading
Students will demonstrate competency in each benchmark and receive a grade before moving on to the next unit.
In a given week the students will experience listening examples, individual practice time, note and rhythm exercises, and other various activities to build skills needed to play.
Late Work: No formative assignments will be accepted as late work, barring extreme circumstances.
Extra Credit: There will be no extra credit in this class. Any concern with grades can be discussed by meeting with me.

Students in Basic Guitar and Piano will learn the foundation skills needed to play current popular songs as well as timeless classics. Part of the semester will be dedicated to learning guitar, and part dedicated to learning piano/keyboard. This course will conclude with a songwriting unit on the students choice of guitar or piano. No prior music experience necessary.
