Scheduling Policies & Procedures

SCHEDULING PROCESS

Booklet Page 12

Be especially thoughtful in selecting courses during the preliminary course request process. The academic schedule is based on a complex interaction of graduation requirements, qualified instructional staff and student requests. Limits on class size, funding and staffing resources impact our flexibility in conducting educationally sound and efficient scheduling. There should be no schedule change requests made after the course request process is completed. Exceptions to scheduling policy may be requested in writing and are subject to approval of the Director of School Counseling in consultation with the Principal.

  • Teachers advise students of their course and level placement and enter the recommendations in PowerSchool.
  • Students make their course request selections in PowerSchool.
  • Counselors meet with each student to review and evaluate course requests. Together they resolve conflicts, make adjustments and modify programs based on individual circumstances and academic needs.
  • Students and parents can view the finalized course requests in PowerSchool.
  • Parents may elect to waive a teacher’s course placement recommendation, but are urged to do so with caution and in consultation with the counselor. Waiver forms are available in the School Counseling Office.
        • Waiving a student into a class that is too challenging or for which the student is not fully prepared may have a detrimental effect on the student’s achievement, progress and self-esteem.
        • Waivers must be submitted by mid-April.
        • Students who waive into a course must spend at least one quarter in that course.
  • Students entering their senior year should take note that colleges expect seniors to continue to enroll in a full and challenging schedule.
