The World Language Department offers both a four and five year program. Students who begin world language study as freshmen in the high school can continue their study to the fourth year level. Students who begin their study in the seventh grade can continue to the fifth year level.

All World Language students study culture and the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

In FRENCH 230, 240, 243, 246, LATIN 202, 204, 206, 209 and SPANISH 267, 277, 280 and 285, students study language and culture at a faster pace and in greater depth. Both the teacher and the students use French and Spanish almost exclusively in the honors classes. Students must meet the course prerequisite to continue at the honors level. The Advanced Placement courses in French, Latin, and Spanish require college level work.

In FRENCH 222, 232, 242, 244, 247, LATIN 199, 200, 201, 203, 205, 207 and SPANISH 263, 273, 283, 284 and 286, students will learn the language and the cultures associated with speakers of the target language. French and Spanish are used during the majority of the daily class activities by both the teacher and the students. Students must meet the course prerequisite to continue with their language study.

WORLD LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT LEARNING:

Students in the World Language program will:

  • Read and listen to audio and video sources to recognize perspectives, practices and products of the cultures studied.
  • Read and listen to audio and video sources to interpret and obtain information.
  • Read and listen to audio and video sources to obtain information about other disciplines using their knowledge of the target language and culture.
  • Write and speak to present ideas, express feelings and exchange opinions in the target language.
  • Write and speak, making comparisons about the target language and culture with their own.
  • Write and speak to communicate with people outside of the school in the target language or about the target culture.

LATIN

201 LATIN I 5 Credits

Given: Full Year

Open To: All Students

Prerequisite: None

Academic Expectations: Speak clearly, write clearly.

This course introduces students to the Latin language via a reading-based program. Students learn the basic forms, syntax and vocabulary used by Roman authors in the meaningful context of an interesting story line, which incorporates the study of Roman culture. The roots of English vocabulary are also studied.


209 INTENSIVE LATIN HONORS 5 Credits

Given: Full Year

Open To: All Students

Prerequisite: No previous Latin study necessary, but approval from current World Language

teacher and approval of Department Chair required.

Academic Expectations: Speak clearly, write clearly.

This course will prepare students for the advanced study of Latin literature by covering all of the fundamentals of Latin. Students will work at a college level pace, covering in one year the curricula of Latin I and Latin II Honors, following a traditional method: emphasis will be on grammar and translation. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be prepared to enroll in Latin III Honors.


202 LATIN II HONORS 5 Credits

Prerequisite: Minimum A (93) in Latin I, current teacher recommendation or Department Chair approval

Latin II Honors students continue to study the Latin language and Roman culture in the context of an interesting story line, and expand their knowledge of English through the study of Latin roots. Honors students work at an accelerated pace, and in greater depth, in preparation for Latin III Honors or the Advanced Placement Course.


203 LATIN II 5 Credits

Latin III Honors students complete the story line begun in Latin I and begin the study of selections from a variety of Roman authors. Grammar, vocabulary and derivative studies are keyed to these selections. Honors students work at an accelerated pace, and in greater depth, in preparation for Latin IV AP.


205 LATIN III 5 Credits

The study of Latin grammar and vocabulary continues and additional Roman cultural topics are covered. The knowledge of English is also expanded through the study of Latin roots.

222 FRENCH I 5 Credits

The basic objective of this course is to develop an introductory level of understanding and proficiency in French in the four basic language areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Listening and speaking skills are enhanced through the use of CD’s and DVD’s. Fundamental principles of grammar are emphasized through the use of the student text and workbooks. In addition, the culture, customs and geography of the French-speaking world are presented through dialogues and reading selections.


230 FRENCH II HONORS 5 Credits

Academic Expectations: Speak clearly, write clearly.

This course continues, at an accelerated pace, the direction set in the French I program. Proficiency in the four language skill areas is enhanced through the use of the student text, workbooks, videos and overhead transparencies. An appreciation for Francophone culture is developed through readings and class discussions. This course is conducted largely in French.


232 FRENCH II 5 Credits

Academic Expectations: Speak clearly, write clearly.

This course presents a continuation of the program of French I with appropriately increased emphasis on the four language skill areas through the use of the student text, workbooks, videos and overhead transparencies. Special attention is given to the mastery of vocabulary for the enhancement of everyday communicative skills. Classroom discussions and readings provide additional opportunities for learning about Francophone world.


240 FRENCH III HONORS 5 Credits

Prerequisite: Minimum B (83) in French II Honors, current teacher recommendation or Department Chair approval

Academic Expectations: Speak clearly, write clearly.

The methodology of the previous two years continues as more advanced materials are introduced. Greater language sophistication is employed as the four language skill areas, listening, speaking, reading and writing, are expanded. The intensity of the course is underscored by the nearly total use of French in the classroom. The dialogues and readings become gradually more sophisticated with each unit. The curriculum includes French films and selected readings. Students are expected to work at an accelerated pace as they complete daily aural/oral and written assignments.


242 FRENCH III 5 Credits

243 FRENCH IV HONORS 5 Credits

The student continues to develop proficiency in the four language skills through a variety of activities and materials. A complete grammar review, including expansion of grammatical concepts and vocabulary enrichment is presented. Selected literary readings are introduced along with continued thematic composition work. Attention is also given to preparation for the French Language Advanced Placement class (French V AP - 246). The course is conducted in French and includes listening activities in lab.


244 FRENCH IV 5 Credits

246 FRENCH AP 5 Credits

Academic Expectations: Speak clearly, write clearly.

French AP follows the Advanced Placement syllabus through a program of grammar study, reading selections, exercises in aural/oral proficiency, and written composition. The study is supplemented with video and online newspaper articles and magazines. The aim of the course is to prepare students to meet the demands of the French Language Advanced Placement Test. In addition to the course program, AP candidates are expected to do individualized supplementary work according to need, as determined and supervised by the AP instructor. The class is conducted in French.

This is an Advanced Placement® course with the curriculum determined by the College Board®. Success in this course is dependent upon strong critical and abstract thinking skills, the ability to apply content and knowledge to unfamiliar problems, a substantial time commitment, and a strong work ethic.


247 FRENCH V 5 Credits

Academic Expectations: Speak clearly, write clearly.

French grammar and vocabulary are incorporated through oral proficiency activities. Students are asked to apply grammatical concepts to real-life situations. Possible classroom activities include: prepared or impromptu skits, oral presentations, story-telling, debates, discussions, informal conversations and video production. Students are expected to speak in French during all oral proficiency activities. The curriculum includes listening activities in the computer lab and selected films.

SPANISH

263 SPANISH I 5 Credits

Spanish I is an introduction to the Spanish language and to the Spanish-speaking peoples, their countries, history and culture. The goals of the course are mastery of basic grammar, vocabulary relative to everyday activities and development of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills as are appropriate for this level. Language awareness is heightened as the similarities and differences between Spanish and English are studied. Students are expected to complete daily homework assignments. The target language is used in class daily.


267 SPANISH II HONORS 5 Credits

Spanish II Honors is a demanding academic course designed to continue the study of the Spanish language and culture begun in the middle school or in Spanish I. The four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are developed through the use of the text, audio-visual materials and supplemental readings. Students are expected to work at an accelerated pace as they complete daily aural/oral and written assignments. The target language is used in class daily.


273 SPANISH II 5 Credits

Spanish II is a continuation of the study of the Spanish language and the Spanish-speaking peoples, their countries, history and culture. Language awareness is further developed as the similarities and differences between Spanish and English are studied. Students are expected to complete daily homework assignments. This course offers an advanced study of Spanish, which stresses practical language use. It is recommended to those qualified students who have demonstrated linguistic ability and high motivation in their previous study of the Spanish language. The curriculum continues to provide for an intensive study of grammar, an extensive vocabulary development and a constant practice of the four language skills. Further insight into the Hispanic peoples and cultures is gained through readings, projects and class discussions. Attention is also given to preparation for the Spanish Achievement Test and the Spanish Language Advanced Placement class (Spanish AP - 285). This college level course is conducted in Spanish. Students are expected to work at an accelerated pace as they complete daily aural/oral and written assignments.


283 SPANISH III 5 Credits

In this course, students continue the study of Spanish grammar. The four language skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing are further developed. The objectives of this course are to complete the basic core of Spanish grammar, to expand vocabulary, encourage students to express themselves in the target language and to become familiar with the culture of the Spanish speaking world. Students are expected to complete daily homework assignments. The target language is used in class daily.


284 SPANISH IV 5 Credits

This course develops useful and practical language competency emphasizing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
