Prevention & Risk Reduction - "When in doubt, sit them out!"
Concussion Education and Wisconsin State Law (Act 172)
While there is no guaranteed way to prevent concussions, education and early recognition are essential in reducing the risks and long-term effects associated with these injuries.
Wisconsin State Concussion Law (Act 172), enacted in 2011, establishes important guidelines for youth athletics to promote concussion awareness and safety. The law includes the following key components:
Preseason Education: Athletes, parents, and coaches must receive and sign educational information sheets regarding concussions before participation in sports.
Immediate Removal: Any athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion must be immediately removed from play. Same-day return to activity is not permitted under any circumstances.
Medical Clearance: Athletes diagnosed with a concussion must be evaluated by a qualified health care professional. Written medical clearance is required before the athlete may return to practice or competition.
Research has shown that Act 172 has significantly improved concussion education and awareness across the state.
