Lunch and Cafeteria
What does it look like to be respectful, responsible, and ready at lunch and in the cafeteria?
Let's start with one shared belief: the main purpose of LSHS is to help students get ready for their next step(s) in life. The vast majority of this preparation takes place in the classroom, and as such, we need to honor the hard work of teachers and students in those settings. Because we have such a large student population, some students will be busy "lunch-ing" while others are busy learning. We help each other when we attend to the following guidelines for lunches on campus.
Stay in the designated lunch areas
Use kind, school appropriate language
Wait in line for your turn
Talk at a volume that recognizes others are learning
Leave the area better than you found it
Use trash and recycling facilities
Clean up after yourself
Recharge for the rest of your day
Have your ID number ready
Move with purpose through the line
2nd lunch: stack the chairs
Where can I go during lunch?
That's a perfect question!
Here's a general list of places we can go at lunch without disrupting others' learning:
Cafeteria and
New Student Commons
Valhallway and
Learning Stairs
Viking
Courtyard
By Main Office and
Concession Stands
Anything else I need to know about lunch time at LSHS?
Sure. In addition to the Vikings at Lunch video that Mrs. Ivelia and Mr. Pearson shared on the first few days of school, remember that food deliveries are not appropriate.
See "Closed Campus" section for more information.
Also, if you need some additional academic assistance during lunch, feel free to pop up to the Learning Commons and take your lunch with you. While it's not a "lunchtime" space, the amazing folks up there will be happy to host you (and your food) as you're working hard on your classes during lunch.
Finally, all three floors of East Hall, their associated restrooms, the stairwells, and landings are only for use by students with a pass from classes in session during lunch.
If it's not a designated lunch space, we shouldn't be there during lunch.
We let others focus on their learning.
Learning Commons (Library)
The Learning Commons is designed to accommodate a wide range of student learning needs. This area is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday - Thursday, and 7:30 - 3:00 on Friday. It provides students with access to multiple seating arrangements, learning environments, and academic services. Modeled on Future Ready Library concepts, we strive to assist students "to become increasingly self-directed as they create digital products of their learning that engage them in critical thinking, collaboration and authentic, real-world problem solving." (Future Ready Library)
In addition, the space "fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation to empower teachers and learners." (Future Ready Library)
Students who wish to access the Learning Commons during non-class time may do so freely.
Students who wish to access the Learning Commons during class time will need to have teacher permission, a pass, and will sign in by visiting the Chromebook Kiosk.
Students will also need to sign out using the Chromebook Kiosk as well.
Student identification numbers will be needed if a student wishes to check out a book or to have access to technology.
Food and drinks are allowed in the Learning Commons in designated areas to include the Viking Café.
When visiting the Learning Commons, please respect the learning rights of others. Make use of headphones and place cell phones in silent mode.
Student Center
The Student Center - now located on the third floor in East Hall (second floor of the Learning Commons/Library) - is an innovative learning space providing students with a dedicated area to study and receive tutoring services. The center has multiple and varied learning spaces to accommodate different student learning styles. Students can read quietly, power their electronics, meet to collaborate with other students, stand or sit while studying, use whiteboards to work out academic problems by themselves or with other students, practice presentations, and have access to a multitude of academic resources. The Student Center is staffed from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. by adults who can provide tutoring services to students in all academic areas. Students are allowed to visit the center during class time with the permission of their teacher. Your teacher will provide a pass for you, and you will need to sign in at the Student Center upon arrival.
Hallways, Pathways, and Stairways
What does it look like to be respectful, responsible, and ready while in the hallways and on the pathways and stairways at LSHS?
We're a big campus. Big not only with regard to the physical geography of our space, but also big in terms of the number of students who are on campus each day. Vikings commit to the following expectations while using the hallways, pathways, and stairways.
Move at an appropriate speed
Respect the learning needs of others
Be considerate of others
Engage in positive interactions
Follow the flow of traffic & be mindful of physical distance
Use positive language at an appropriate volume
Have conversations out of the flow of traffic
Leave it better than you found it.
Stay to the right
Use a hall pass if it's not passing period
A Word about Hall Passes ...
For the most part, the vast majority of our learning is happening in the classroom. To support student learning, we acknowledge the importance of students remaining in class as much as possible.
Students must have a hall pass to be in the hall or anywhere outside of class. Staff members are instructed to send any student back to their class who does not have a hall pass.
Since you'll want to get back to learning quickly, use the bathroom closest to your classroom
Vending machines are open before school, during passing period, at lunch, and after school. It's not appropriate to get a hall pass to visit vending machines during class.
Students who abuse/misuse hall pass privileges, or have disciplinary/ attendance/ academic concerns may lose those privileges.
Hall passes do not allow students to visit their car. Cars are off limits during the school day. See Closed Campus and Student Driving.
This is our hall pass for the 22-23 school year.
Eighteen Year Old Students
Eighteen year old students wishing to write their own notes and sign for field trips, etc. must first secure written verification from their parents approving and acknowledging the student's' responsibilities in signing for themselves. Once parents/guardians have approved, students will meet with an administrator who will review the student's attendance, academic, and discipline habits. Administrators reserve the right to deny a student this privilege based on the review. The forms are available in the attendance office. Parental acknowledgment and approval to sign notes does not alleviate the student's responsibility to adhere to all of the rules and attendance policies of the school in order to maintain enrollment and credit. Student abuse of this privilege will result in termination of this privilege.
Student Directories
Student names may appear in several directories at the high school - including, but not limited to the following: attendance cards, daily attendance forms, data processing scheduling cards, the annual, teacher's grade books, counseling office files, athletic eligibility lists, class lists by grade, athletic programs, drama programs, music concert programs, business office records, honor roll lists, baccalaureate program, commencement program, emergency locator cards, permanent records/files/folders, banquet programs, roster and activity bus lists, athletic rosters, health cards, school insurance lists, and transportation lists for bus routes.
Student Finances
The business secretary will handle all money - except cafeteria transactions - in the business office. In-person ASB and yearbook purchases will take place before school or during lunch hours only. If paying by check, make the check to LSHS for the exact amount of purchase. Checks written over the amount CANNOT be accepted. Online payment options will be available as well. Change cannot be made at the high school office at any time. All lunch money transactions are handled directly through the cafeteria. For malfunctioning vending machines, for reimbursement purposes, the student needs to contact the vendor whose phone number is posted on the front of the machine.
Visitor Policy
Lake Stevens High School is a closed campus. Non-students are not allowed on campus without administrative approval. (Refer to School District Policy 1420 ) Visitors are allowed for educational reasons, not social visits. Students wishing to bring student visitors to the high school must complete the student visitor form and receive approval from administration at least one (1) school day in advance. Students may seek permission for one high school age visitor per year. No student visitors will be permitted near the end of a semester or during any testing time. All visitors are required to register with the main office immediately upon arrival on the campus. All visitors must be of high school age.
Telephones/Emergency Calls
The telephones in the office and classrooms are for school business only. Emergency messages from parents need to be directed to the main office - the number is 425-335-1515. Students will be called from class to take a call in emergency situations only. The main office counter phone can be used by students.
Voter Registration
Students, age 18 or older, are eligible to register to vote. Registration is required before you can exercise the right to vote. The main office has a supply of voter registration cards that are to be mailed to the county. The office will be happy to assist you. As part of your senior social studies class, you will also learn about and receive instruction on how to register to vote.
