Welcome to the Year 9/10 Subject Selection page
This site is designed to guide students and families through the Year 9/10 subject selection process. It provides information about the mandatory courses set by NESA, as well as details on the elective subjects available at the College. The aim is to help students make informed choices that reflect their interests, strengths, and future pathways.

Elective Subjects Selection
As of 2026, students at Woodlawn are able to select 4 elective subjects over Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10);
Two x 1 year (100 hour) courses that will be studied for Year 9 that are selected mid-Year 8
Two x 1 year (100 hour) courses that will be studied for Year 10 that are selected mid-Year 9
Most of these Stage 5 elective subjects are NESA-accredited and will be listed on a student's RoSA certificate. As of 2026, some subjects will be school-developed courses that are not NESA-accredited and will not appear on the RoSA. This information can be found on each of the elective course pages.
Things to Consider in the Subject Selection process.
Consideration In Selecting Electives
When selecting subjects, students should take into account:
Student interest - a student will most readily succeed in courses in which they have a basic interest
Possible future study directions
Ability and aptitude for the course
Stage 6 subjects do not have mandatory prerequisites of Stage 5 elective courses. However, certain Stage 6 subjects may benefit from prior experience in related Stage 5 electives.
This means you don’t need to worry too much about choosing electives that “match” senior courses. Instead, focus on choosing subjects that:
Develop skills you’ll find useful later
Match your interests and strengths
Support any future study directions you’re already considering
Students can study no more than 100 hours (1 year) of a language in Stage 4/5 in order to be eligible to study a ‘Beginners’ language course in Stage 6. Woodlawn is only able to offer Italian Beginners in Stage 6. Italian Continuers and other languages may be studied through Distance Education in Stage 6.
Students are only able to have a maximum of TWO of the following Industrial Technology courses in Stage 5 recognised on their RoSA;
Industrial Technology - Timber
Industrial Technology - Metal
Industrial Technology - Farm Maintenance
