The study of Textiles Technology provides students with knowledge of the properties, performance and uses of textiles.
Textiles have played a significant role throughout human history, satisfying both functional and aesthetic needs. Textiles continue to satisfy needs in society by being a means of self-expression, by having social meaning and cultural significance, and by performing specific functions in commercial, industrial and personal settings.
A study of Textiles Technology provides students with broad knowledge of the properties, performance and uses of textiles in which fabrics, colouration, yarns and fibres are explored. Project work that includes investigation and experimentation will enable students to discriminate in their choices of textiles for particular uses.
Students will investigate the work of textile designers and from this research make judgments about the appropriateness of design ideas, the selection of materials and of tools and the quality of textile items.

By examining the work of designers students will learn to use the creative process to design textile items.
Design ideas and experiences are documented and communicated and will show evidence of each of the states of designing, producing and evaluating.
Students will learn to select, use and manipulate appropriate materials, equipment and techniques to produce quality textile projects.
Students will learn to identify the properties and performance criteria of textiles by deconstructing textile items and identify the influence of historical, cultural and contemporary perspectives on textile design, construction and use.
Project work forms the basis of every unit of work. Students are taught an array of practical skills that will be skills for life. Each unit of work (project) usually has a duration of approximately 15 weeks. Even though we participate in practical skills for 70% of class time, the theory component of the course is engaging, relevant and purposeful in relation to the role of textiles in a contemporary society.
There are many great statistics related to the success of participating in hands-on practical subjects. While engaging with the arts boosts mental wellbeing, creative activity undertaken daily is linked to positive psychological functioning. Textile craft has long been used to help with anxiety, can help us engage in mindfulness and keep us in the present moment.
Students may elect to undertake project work in which they will select any focus area of interest and work independently. The scope and nature of the project is to be negotiated with the teacher.
The levy for this course is $110.00/year. This includes all materials and patterns.
Note: Students will need to purchase some fabrics, notions etc, as required for some individual project work.
