The study of forms, styles and ideas in music enables young people to develop an interest in appreciation and enjoyment of music.
The levy for this course is $65.00/year.
This is a practically oriented course that is an opportunity for students who have an interest and talent in this area to develop a variety of musical skills. While the Junior Music Course is not a compulsory prerequisite for the study of the Higher School Certificate Music Course, it is highly recommended. The basic skills, understanding, and knowledge gained in the Year 9/10 course are a valuable basis for Years 11 and 12. For a student contemplating a career in music, especially at the tertiary level, the study of music to the Higher School Certificate level is recommended.
The study of music is divided into 3 areas:
Performance
Composing
Listening Performance provides for the singing of various kinds of music and playing on a variety of instruments.
Students who already study or take up the specialised study of an instrument will also be encouraged towards solo performance as well as being encouraged and assisted to perform in instrumental groups. The main purposes of composing are to develop the student's abilities to experiment with sounds, confidently, and accurately and become familiar with musical notation and music technology.
Listening Skills are a highly important attribute to the musician, and students will listen to a wide variety of music representative of the topics selected for the study. All three areas are integrated into the study of the following topics throughout the year.
1. Jazz
2. Instrumental music
3. Australian music – Aboriginal
4. Music for the Theatre
5. Music for Radio Film & Television
6. Art music after 1900
7. Australian music: Art-Jazz-Pop
8. Popular Music
