The study of Photographic and Digital Media enables young people to develop an interest in and enjoyment of investigating the rapidly evolving ideas, practices and technologies of this art form.
Students will make photographic and digital media works using materials and techniques drawn from at least one of the following areas:
STILL (chemical based photography, digital photography, computer generated images, installation works)Â
INTERACTIVE (web design, internet, games, virtual realities, performance and installation works)
MOVING (video, film, animation, performance and installation works)
This course will allow students to undertake an in-depth study of many aspects of photography and digital media. This area is one of the most rapidly changing fields in contemporary society and is tied to rapid development in technology. Students are exposed to photographic imagery almost constantly and this often defines how we perceive our world. In this course students will explore analog (darkroom) photography, desktop publishing (print and digital), digital still photography, digital videos and various software packages.
This course is 60% making photographic and digital works (practical) and 40% critical and historical (theory). The idea is that the making of work helps the students to understand the work they study and the studying of the photographs work to help students develop their own works.
Students studying this subject produce a wide variety of works and explore a range of different techniques.
Students can generally expect to be introduced to the darkroom and to the basics of analog photography, as well as learning the basics of digital photography and photoshop. They explore the studio and use studio lightings to take portraits as well as learning the basics of using a DSLR camera.
Students explore advanced image editing in Photoshop, creating a range of different images as well as how to create stop motion animation sequences. Students investigate the world of documentary photography and photojournalism, as well as looking at hoax photo and photographic ethics. They explore the world of low-fi or lomographics and retro graphics using analog cameras as well as learning about digital and print publishing using InDesign culminating in the development of their Body Of Works.
Students will learn about the works of photographers, film-makers, computer/digital and performance artists and develop a body of knowledge and an understanding about their own work and the work of others.
Students will learn to develop their research skills, approaches to experimentation and how to make informed, personal choices and judgements.
This course provides specialised learning opportunities for students to understand and explore the nature of the media as an important field of artistic practice, conceptual knowledge and technological procedure.
Students will build a portfolio of photographic and digital works that demonstrates their various investigations of the world, and record in their journal their explorations and experiences of Photographic and Digital Media.
The levy for this course is $140.00/year.
Additional paper and film may need to be purchased.
