College Readiness

Introduction

Our students have multiple opportunities to engage in college-ready coursework throughout high school. Beginning in freshman year, students take a semester-long Ethnic Studies class that prepares them for Advanced Ethnic Studies, a 12th grade course modeled after college-level Ethnic Studies coursework. All juniors take College and Career Prep, a weekly seminar class that emphasizes internships and reflecting on multiple post-secondary pathway options. All seniors participate in a weekly Senior Seminar course, which helps students prepare for their post-secondary options.

Ethnic Studies Introduction

Designed to prepare students for the rigors of college, this 9th and 12th grade elective explores personal identity, race as a social construct, levels of oppression, and movements of resistance.

9th Grade Ethnic Studies

Ethnic Studies focuses on the history of people of color – the experiences we have had historically and in the present day. It explores questions, such as: How do different aspects of our identity (race, class, gender, family, immigration, migration.) impact our experiences? How do levels and types of oppression define who is in considered a member in the United States, and how can we work towards dismantling those systems to liberate our communities?

12th Grade Advanced Ethnic Studies

As part of the semester-long course, students have the opportunity to participate in lectures from college professors and observe a Socratic Seminar at a nearby four-year university.

In addition to engaging in Socratic Seminars, students are also regularly assessed through vocabulary exams, projects and presentations, and reading assessments.
