Increasing

College Access

Empowering students to become lifelong learners is one of our top priorities at Lighthouse. We want students to graduate ready to pursue a college degree, prepared with the academic skills and resilience needed for the road ahead. The first step, however, is helping students and families see college as a viable option for their future. Below are our approach and a few documents that our Director of College and Career shares to increase access to the college application and admissions process.

Scheduling A-G for All

To ensure that students are eligible to apply to four-year universities in California, we have designed courses and student schedules so that every student is enrolled in a series of classes that will allow them to be college-eligible by the time they graduate. Operating as a small school generally means that there are fewer options for courses. We have done our best, however, to use this to our advantage in order to set students up so that every single class they take satisfies an A-G requirement.

Unless a student is participating in a work-based internship or enrolled in a community college, all students take four classes per semester, including a Humanities, Math, Science, and Elective course, every year. Our Humanities courses satisfy both the A and B requirements of History/Social Studies and English and our combination of Elective courses fulfill the E, F, or G requirement. This arrangement allows every single student access to the college-eligible coursework needed to apply to a CSU or UC.
