LPS Innovation and Technology

Innovation and Technology in the Lexington Public Schools supports the growth and change of students, educators and staff. Our goal is to create systems and structures which support a district-wide culture that drives improvement in student and adult learning through the strategic implementation of emerging technologies and innovation. This is rooted in our district mission of joy in learning; curiosity in life; and compassion in all we do.

The Technology Department ensures that all students, teachers, administrators, and staff have access to and become proficient users of technology and that technology becomes a powerfully integrated and routinely used tool in the Lexington Public Schools. Our goal is to ensure that technology resources are implemented to support the delivery of instruction, support curriculum and support the daily operations of the school district. Our department places a strong focus on professional learning for educators and staff, collaboration with other departments, and using software and tools which are necessary for student engagement and learning in a robust educational environment.

Community Support for Technology

Lexington Public Schools is fortunate to have a robust capital and expense budget which are supported by the community. The annual budget process includes support for a yearly expense budget and also a capital budget which is based on a five year capital budget plan. The expense budget, which is part of the district's greater budget process, includes items that recur on a yearly basis. The capital budget is focused on infrastructure, hardware and devices.

Technology in Our Schools

Through our capital budget process, Lexington is fortunate to provide a variety of technology to students, educators, staff, and administrators. Below is a short list of some of the primary technologies that can be found across Lexington Public Schools. While not an exhaustive list, it is intended to provide a snapshot of some of the technology used in teaching and learning in Lexington schools.

  • iPads: PreK-2, specialized curricular programs - ie: digital art classes, special education

  • Chromebooks: Shared carts in Grade 2, 1:1 in Grades 3-5 (in school use only), 1:1 in Grades 6-12 (take home program)

  • ELMOs (Electronic document cameras): Used for daily instruction in PreK-12 classrooms

  • Projection Systems (short throw projectors): Used for daily instruction in PreK-12 classrooms

  • MacBook Air Laptops: The primary devices used by educators and administrators for daily teaching, planning and operations

  • PC Desktops and Laptops: The primary devices used by support staff and central office used to support daily district operations

  • Voice Over Internet Phones (VOIP): Used across all LPS Schools and Offices

Students enjoy exciting programs and systems that afford worldwide connectivity. Both stationary and portable computer labs, outfitted with state of the art equipment as well as a variety of educational and productivity applications and software, are available to students at all grade levels. In our schools, all instructional spaces are completely networked and have access to the Internet.

All of the LPS school buildings have full managed, robust wireless network to support teaching and learning. The District also has put in place several administrative systems to support student information, financial systems, collaborative and communication services. Lexington Public Schools has constructed an up-to-date network linking all schools websites under a comprehensive District website.
