Lexington METCO Alum News

A Bolder Past for a Brighter Future

We are very excited to announce that Lexington High School will be offering two new courses this year: one in African American History, and one in Asian American History. Special thanks and appreciation goes to Jere Zeder who wrote this article, “A Bolder Past for a Brighter Future, for the Lexington Times Magazine. Jere’s article highlights the impressive efforts of LHS students who started a petition to develop new diverse courses and to improve diverse hiring practices in the district. Dr. Stephens and I had an opportunity to meet with these incredible students and recognize them at the Annual Town Meeting in the 2018-2019 school year!

The LHS Social Studies Department Head, Dr. Kerry Dunne, invited students to join focus groups to develop the courses. Students and faculty came together to create the syllabus and write the course descriptions, which are now published in the LHS Program of Studies. In February of 2019, several students began the process of exploring new ways for Black culture and history to be represented throughout the school system. Annabelle Charles, Takirah Clark, Krya Cooper, Naiomi Harris, and Alea Turner worked with English Department Head, Jane Day to create a course in African American Literature. These students left a legacy, inspiring others to own their learning and make a difference in our community.
