YEAR 5

Year 5 have had a great start to the term and have engaged brilliantly with our new topic - Space. We have been learning about our solar system and looking at the movement of the Earth and the other planets relative to the sun. We have also been looking at the movement of the moon in relation to the Earth and hope you have enjoyed filling out the moon diaries. We have also incorporated our space topic into our English lessons and have been learning all about Katherine Johnson and her extraordinary life working at NASA. The children have been researching her life, the challenges she faced and the amazing work she did and have just finished their own mini Katherine Johnson biographies. We have also started a new class reader 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell Boyce, which will be the focus for our next piece of writing

In Maths we are looking at fractions and the children have been working very hard finding equivalent fractions, adding fractions and converting fractions and will now be moving onto subtracting fractions. We are very proud of how hard the children have been working.

As you may already know, our History topic for this half term is the Vikings and the children have been researching Viking long ships and we are looking forward to seeing the results of their home learning in a few weeks!

In PSHE we are looking at our future dreams and goals and it has been very interesting hearing what the children would like to be when they are older. In RE we are focusing on Hindusim, and how Hindus worship. In Art we are looking at mono printing and will be producing our own prints in the coming weeks and in music we have been looking at songs from different cultures.

Overall, it has been a great start to the term.
